Cherry Grove
17th Ave and U.S. 1 Miami, Florida
Don't know the owners. The deejay was the mixing machine himself, OCTAVIO MACHADO.
Cherry Grove was a very small club off US-1, that was very dark, few lights. Very hard for a man to get inside. It was a LESBIAN nightclub. Only inside twice, as a heterosexual man, this place not only fascinated me, but was the part of many fantasies. Its music was pure DISCO, and the doorperson pure terror!! Hopefully now the deejay will tell us all!

COMMENTS ON THIS DISCO / DISCOTHEQUE / NIGHTCLUB
This wasn't the Cherry's on the Green disco was it? It was in Key Biscayne and I remember a young Leo Vela being a mixer there. Back from the 96X days before the station became Power 96...
Actually Casanova Dude, that CHERRY'S was called "Cherry's on the Green", located in the Key Biscayne Golf Course's Function room. Four speakers hanging from the ceiling. Small place, and yes, LEA VELA did deejay there, but WAY before he worked at POWER 96, he was working at DISCO 96, a station that had it's lisence pulled by the FCC because a deejay named OZ rigged a HONEYMOON IN PUERTO RICO contest in the summer of 79. I knoew it is a long time ago. Al Chio and Funky Frank Walsh also were deejays there. On Saturday nights, local Night Club deejays woulsd spin a few hours, I was there, as were Carlos Nodal, Luis"Rattlesnake" Martinez and others. After this station, which used to be accross AURTHUR GODFREY Road in front of the Roosevelt Theatre in Miami Beach closed, Al Chio went to Y100. Leo Vela went to SUPER Q, and Funky Frank Walsh started a new station in Cuttler Ridge called RHYTHM 98. Remember now?? They Cherry's I'm talking about was a small hole in the wall , off US1 and north on 17th Avenue. There is a QUIZNO'S there now. DJ Octavio Machado wass there, wish he would tell us the real story on that place. MIXMACHIMNE???
Man, you are chock full of info...I remember all that you speak of even the Rhythm 98 station. In fact I still have a cassette with a mix from Rhythm 98. It was really poor reception out by me so I had to usually change my stereo mode to mono to even get it...Take care man and thanks for the info and the memories.
One other thing on Cherry's vynil...if you spun there you probably saw our group there a few times. We were usually the biggest , if not the only group there...lol. We were Miami High Stings and were all in a club and would hand there once in a while...I remember having fun since we would basically take over the place and make it our own private party... Peace.
I remember the group from Miami High at CHERRY'S ON THE GREEN, you are right, you were like the only ones who ever went there. The only place(well not the only place)in town that let under-age kids in. The CHERRY'S that this page belongs to is the LESBIAN club off US 1 and SW 17th ave. that is where the MixMachine used to spin at. CHERRY'S ON THE GREEN was inside Key Biscayne's Golf Course. Miami High students did run that place!! It wasn't around too long, maybe a year or two, thats all.
I get the message, with a name like CASANOVEDUDE, you spent alot of time at CIRO'S, but did you ever go to my CLUB MYSTIQUE??From 1984-86? At least once??
Hung out at 'Novas starting around mid to late 1980. Went off to college after 1980 and when I came back for breaks use to hang at 'Novas on Wednesday and Sunday, 94th Aero on Friday . Saturday was a mish mosh. Usually was Pete and Lenny's but did go to Mystique a few times as well as Ziegfields. I liked Mystique but was down here only 4-5 months a year and was up North the rest of the time so had limited times I could hang there. In any case, all those places were quite enjoyable. Had some of the best times of my life in all those discos. Your insight into these places is fantastic as you can give details very few can...Thanks!!!
Well Casanovedude, I played in a lot of different clubs in both New York City Area, and all over Miami. I ran the Florida Record Pool in its prime, met and knew all the deejays. Friends with almost all of them. Saw everything, never missed a thing. A real-life story, that's me. I have a point of view of those days, that few can even imagine. Keep coming around, there is plenty left!!
The Cherry's you speak of was actually called Cherry Grove, I sent in the logo, hopefully they get it up soon.
In fact I sent in both Cherrie's logos.
Thank you, 305. Now if you could get MACHADO to comment, the world would be perfect. How was your WMC event?
Thats the wrong logo for this page,it's the Cherry Grove logo that belongs here!
You mean the Miami Dance Music Awards?
We did great!
Close to 1000 viejos on a Friday night, not bad, especially since we put everything together in less than 3 weeks!
Next year it's going to be one for the ages!
I can confirm, right here, right now that Miss Celi Bee will be coming out of retirement to attend and perform for the MDMA's 2009!
I cant wait!
Heh,now let's see how many of the shady wanna be promoter f*ucks out there try to reach her, after they read what I just wrote!
lol
I have a slide show of the event on my site www.305Disco.com
And I am in the middle of editing the video footage as we speak.
Next year, you should get ISH to reunite FOXY!!! And get THE VYNIL JUNKIE to come out of retirement as well!!
No creo que that will ever happen, you coming out of retirement would be great,we could use someone around here who knows how to spin the oldies without playing the same old, tired, predicatable tracks!
I will definitely do it! Plenty of time to get ready!!!!
