Roller World

Westchester Ave, bet Manor and Ward Aves, Bronx, New York

Owner: ???

DJs: Bambaataa
Red Alert
Jazzy Jay

Roller World used to be the old Ward Theatre, where I'd go as a kid to see all the Bruce Lee movies back in the 70's. It was a perfect site for a skating rink. It was located on Westchester Ave between Manor and Ward Aves in the Bronx. I remember they'd have nights where dj's like Bambaataa, Red Alert and Jazzy Jay would have Zulu Nation jams there. Definitely a hip hop type mentality there, which was perfect. It was also a hangout of now-reknown dj Little Louie Vega. He was leader of a skate crew called Roller Bandits. I was on a rival crew called Dynamic Rollers but the 2 crews all knew each other so it was all good. It did good it's first year but then the skating fever in the hood kinda died out and we started hitting dance clubs up. As a kid though, it was definitely a cool place with some good memories. The last I can remember, it was turned into a furniture store or something. I think the theatre marquee still stands above the site.
