700 Top Disco Songs
The 700 Best Disco Songs List Is Here!
What are the best Disco songs? Some folks will give you only 100 Disco songs so a few years ago DiscoMusic.com compiled the first ever Top 500, but this time we really give it to you... 700 Disco songs from the 1970s and 1980s! From obscure underground Disco to the more popular Disco tracks... We asked the guys that keep the music spinning: the DJ. Current and former Disco DJs from America and abroad were asked to tell DiscoMusic.com their top Disco songs and the result is this list of the 700 Top DJ Certified Disco Songs.
One will notice a distinct difference from past member compiled Disco lists. It goes without saying that no list of Disco songs will ever be perfect however this one comes pretty close!

Dec 19, 11 | 6:22 amAwesome site!!!! I was in Disco heaven when I saw all the songs that I could not think of. Disco was never dead to my ears and I'm so happy that there are many others out there feeling the same :)
LET'S GO... DISCO

Dec 18, 11 | 9:53 pmI'm looking for an artist name who wrote the funk / disco song "Fill Me Up." It was done by a black female solo artist, I think, in the late 70's to mid 80's. I had it on a 45 record. I don't know if it was a B-side song or if it was a single. Here are some of the Lyrics
Fill me up, Please don't leave me dry, I cant leave until I'm satisfied, Your love is the fuel, that keeps my motor running, I can't get enough, Oh No No, Come on and Fill Me with your love...
Thanks

Dec 04, 11 | 4:13 pmBerny, deberÃas poner una prueba de 30 segundos en cada cancion para saber de cual se trata.
-
Nov 27, 11 | 5:07 pmwhere's 'Smarty Pants,"Neusy Neighbors," "Rain 2000", "When the fuel runs out" "Dirty old man", and "Tribe", to name a few. Anyone else remember these. Anyone here from Queens, N.Y. old enough to remember clubs like Community Gardens and Broadcaster's inn?

Nov 23, 11 | 8:01 amAre you Crazy??? Miss You----Mr. Big Stuff-----Rappers Delight is considered Disco???? You may as well throw in some Zepplin, Beatles & Grand Funk while you are at it----

-
Nov 02, 11 | 2:03 amFrank G.C, I was DJ'ing around that time. Definitely, "I'll do anything for you" should be mentioned as one of the greatest disco hits. around that time, there was a group call Unlimited Touch, they had a song called "searching to find one", another group called "Nick Striker Band", they had a song called "a little bit of Jazz", and even a group called The strikers, with their smash "Body Music", I can also add that during that time a lot of Canadian and European groups arose, like "Lime" with "you're my magician", "your love" and many others. those were the days, pure table effects and no computers.
-
Oct 08, 11 | 12:06 pmGreat this is a great chart... im wondering where can i get this all at once anyone knows
-
Sep 25, 11 | 3:29 pmTHat's just way too many songs.
-
Aug 30, 11 | 2:30 amI was impressed with the music selections but I was just wondering as I was reading "Mark Trezise" list where do you spin? I saw some stuff there I know was not
back in dance or disco days when I was spinning and mixing,Hillbilly Shoes,I just can't see me in some of the clubs mixing that song in,I don't recall it during the 70's. In fact
I saw a lot of songs that I didn't recall as disco hits back in the day.I been woking radio and clubs since 1969 and I for the life of me have no recall of some of the songs. Really they were not around then, not that your list is not good,I guess you could mix it all in today, then you would get booed out of the club.I have seen some dj's back in the day get booed out for the wrong music. Maybe things are different now,I'm a 'ol skooler,I started spinning at house parties back in the 60's as a young blood, first radio gig at 16 back in the 60's.Lot of years and a lot of music. I never seen anyone mix country, back then Country was real Country. Music has really gone thru some changes, but 'ol skool, and disco has never changed. I guess I'm kind stuck in that 'ol skool mode, back then was the real music and Jocks,no computers just that real table skills. You have to be back there to appreciate real skills on the wheels of steel. That was my day,I'm glad to have been there and a part of that disco era.
I see a lot of musical taste, everybody has there favorites,I have been checking them out and I want to thank everyone who has added their favorites, just helps me add to my collection. I just listen now I just a bit old for the clubs.
Thanks evreyone for the music, keep the music alive.

Aug 05, 11 | 6:22 pmPlease keep it positive like Jon said.
Good call on ABBA "dancing queen" should of been in the top 50.
True too Donna Summers no one better in her time, my first album.
MARK anyone can copy n paste there karaoke list stop polluting the title.
Now here are a few I remember, which were very hot in NYC area clubs & radio. Great job on the list, God Bless.
Denroy Morgan- " I'll do anything for you" top 50.
so many Madonna mentions yet her best dance club song not here "burning up".
Mixologists favorite by Straffe - "Set it off"
D- Train " Your the one for me"
Patrice Rushen "Send me forget me nots"
If I remember more I will post thank you.

Aug 01, 11 | 4:18 amI like your list of 70's
and 80's disco
-
Jul 26, 11 | 10:08 amI was a DJ back in the late 70's until mid 80's. I am impressed with this list, but one Disco group that need to be mentioned is The Erotic Drum Band. They had big disco hits like Plug me to Death, Action '78, Love Disco Style, and many more. What about the European group called Telex, they had a big disco classic called Discow Moskow. La bionda, Los Gonzalez, these where also great disco groups as well, Peter Jacques Band, and a group called Azoto, they came out in the early 80s, but they had great disco sound, San Salvador, Soft Emotion, the whole Album was a tremendous disco hit.
-
Jul 10, 11 | 2:41 amGreat list.... but still missing some great songs and true some songs aren't true disco, maybe borderline soul and r&b.
Disco songs all have a certian sound and beat like nothing else, I guess that why I keep on a endless search for disco comp/ for my collection
-
Jul 07, 11 | 4:56 pmnice list of records, some "disco some not! To me disco records started around '74 to '78 .the disco sound was bubbling around '73 on down to '72, but i believe it became a household word on record, radio, and clubs around '74( Crown Heights Affair, Dreaming A Dream/Hues Corporation,Rock The Boat/First Choice,Player/Love Unlimited Orchestra,Love's Theme) I know your not going to tell me that in 1973 you walked into a record shop and asked for that DISCO RECORD you just heard on the radio ? the title disco was not yet being used ! hey tom moulton the grand daddy of the extended mix started putting edits on vinyl around '74 /'75 and disco died around '78, only the euro sound around that time kept it going with a disco style, shortly after no one was using the title disco. hey check all your records from '79 tell me if you see any record with a DISCO MIX or DISCO REMIX on the label ! it's mostly DANCE MIX, REMIX, MIXED BY, etc. etc. even KTU changed it's calling signature, KISS FM never mention disco KISS MASTER MIX DANCE PARTY ! most of the music after '79 changed big time, not disco the way i know it.

Mar 11, 11 | 12:04 pmi read the list and really like alot of the songs on the list and some I have never heard of, will have to check those out....I was surprised that one of the biggest disco/crossover hits wasn't anywhere on the chart, it was played in discos like crazy "No more tears" (enough is enough) by Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand......not sure why that song was not on the list at all....

Jan 30, 11 | 5:59 amI AM JUST DISCOVERING THE INTERNET AND ALL IT CAN DO TO FIND THINGS. I AM NOT YOUNG JUST RESISTANT. ANYWAY THIS IS A SUPER COOL PROJECT. I WENT ON VACATION ONCE AND MY APPARTMENT WAS BURGLERIZED AND ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE I OWNED WHICH WAS NOT MUCH AT THE TIME THEY TOOK MY ENTIRE MUSIC COLLECTION. 1700 12" ALBUMS AND 400 OR 500 CD'S,45'S AND 78'S. I WAS DEVESTATED. I AM STILL TRYING TO RECOUP THAT LOSS AND IT HAS BEEN SINCE 1997. I AM FINALLY TO THE DISCO STAGE OF THAT REPURCHASING AND AM HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THINGS I ONCE OWNED.MOSTLY BECAUSE I JUST DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY WERE. YOUR LIST HAS HELPED ME SIGNIFICANTLY BY ALLOWING ME TO REVISIT THE ERA AND REMEMBER THOSE SONGS AND MANY MORE JUST BY SEEING THE TITLES AND ARTISTS NAMES. THERE IS ONE SONG I CANNOT REMEMBER THOUGH AND IF ANYBODY CAN HELP ME PLEAE SEND ME THE INFO AND IF POSSIBLE HOW TO FIND ANOTHER COPY. I WOULD BE GREATFUL.I ONLY REMEMBER ONE LINE FROM THE SONG AND IT'S "THE KEYS TINKLE LIKE SO MUCH CRUSHED ICE INTO A DRY MARTINI." THIS WAS A DANCE/RAP FROM 1979-1981 MAYBE. ANYWAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND HARD WORK.KEEP IT UP

Nov 09, 10 | 3:26 pmHey all love the list. Trying to find something in this looooong list. So time consuming. Its an instrumental disco I used to hear all the time in 79. It had an oriental theme using some Chinese instruments. Extemely popular, used to hear all the time on 92 KTU in Brooklyn. It was uptempo & had to be in the top 20 of that year. Please help me you disco conniseurs, lol.
-
Oct 30, 10 | 12:59 pmGreat list, - however, I remember a track that really blew our minds (at the time), called " EXPANSIONS " by Lonnie Liston Smith, or at least I think. Can anybody help me find this again. Please.

Oct 09, 10 | 9:03 amNEED HELP...trying to figure out the name of this song and the artist!!!! the artist sounds like sylvester but I have had no luck in my search...the lyrics are something like this "I'm goin out tonight to the club, get my drink on free my mind just bc, have a good time...everybody get crazy"
PLEASE NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIGURE THIS OUT - need a disco club expert!!!!
-
Oct 04, 10 | 11:57 pmWHAT A GREAT JOB! it is so hard create a list by preference because of everyone has a very different feelings on songs .It may concern to a music expert team based on rythms, harmony, solos at amount of instruments and voices, filled up, music pattern, chorus, variations and replays gamma, and so on , but we must know that many of great songs have been forgotten, but ANYWAY,
ENJOY ALL OF THEM!!!

Sep 09, 10 | 8:30 pmWhat a great site and what a great list. I was so surprised to see so many people who still remember and appreciate this music. I've been reading this site for an hour now and I can't help but wonder how many of you I had seen on the dance floor back then.

Aug 23, 10 | 11:44 pmCan't imagine this discussion is still going
on. The person who mentioned Disco Tex and
his Sexolettes, "Get Dancin". Pretty important
song to disco. It actually features the voice
of the guy who played the 2001 DJ in the movie
Saturday Night Fever.
Too bad that the date recognized by these
folks here,,, doesn't allow for a group
like Richie Weeks (Weeks & Company).
They sang "Rock Your World (Joho, Joho".
Always a floorfiller.

Instead of talking about nothing but your ego.
What song or song's do you think should be on the list of greatest songs. That aren't on this 700. That's the topic. The only negative person is you!
Add something postive to the list! Did you read the whole list?? If not please do, there are great songs and groups there. And many other artist not on the list! 700 songs are just the tip of a general reply. Here we crack the codes, many groups on the list have more then one hit = songs!
Laces Roller Skating Rink NY My Dance Logo Name
Physical Attraction
How about firefly Love is Gonna Be on Your Side
Add, don't subtract
The list is a great start in a long list of great artist. It's so much bigger then that! YES!
Great list to work from!

May 01, 10 | 3:02 pmbecause of my love for music I ventured into a disco
and decided to be a dj. trained by a pro, was good to go and hit local clubs to do the show.....
but besides my dj work, I loved clubbing ,partying
and hearing fellow djs as well. traveled around the
US & Canada, checking out club music at Limelight in
Atalanta. Le Tube in Toronto, Club Coconuts in Cleveland, White Star in Hamtramck. Xenon in NY,the
list is unending...that was since '76 and today the
beat goes on regardless of the moronic attacks....
trash disco,no,,,cash disco.....disco sucks, howbout
disco bucks...with all the response here-disco critics---read it & weep!!!!!!

Mar 31, 10 | 12:53 amomg - got a little hot in the discussion of 'what is Disco'. We all have are respectful opinion. I'd have to really bang my head hard and go back and relive, study the 70's and the early 80's to properly, if at all possible explain this. So of the top of my head here's my version. Disco was a beat with rhythm and style. We danced and dressed Disco. What we listened to was the beat with rhythm and the style of the mix. If we follow the way we dressed, danced and even did our hair, it will greatly help us understand what Disco was, where it went or is. Try dressing Disco and dancing Disco to your choice of music other than DISCO. It's is very difficult to do this unless it is DISCO. You can fake it at a party where they play Trance or Race but that's just for fun. DISCO was not for fun but it was a life style. Music evolves. It's transition is decided by time. DJ FrankeeeCee stated Disco Morphed and this is a touchy word to utilize correctly. Sampling disco into a techno or rave song is not morphing. Morphed Disco song is the same style but just another different Disco song, defined as "The variation of a distinct form". Cerrone, Soccio, Hartman, Tantra, Voyage is Disco but near the overlapping transition (evolving) time to Techno, New Wave and Dance. These have there transition era too.
Well, regarding all the names of songs and artist in the post here is my pick, and it's just for fun...(no pun...). Did I miss reading this DISCO SONG...a BIG FAV TOO!
Boy's will be Boy's by TWO TONS OF FUN!
There's four trax and they are DISCO.
Thx for loving music, especially DISCO.
So, put the needle on the record...
Love is Peace,,,From Toronto, Canada

I LOVED THE SALSOUL AND MFSB SOUNDING MUSIC ..
I ESPICALLY HATED THOSE FUNKADIALICS ... I SAY THEY ARE PREDESSORS TO THE RAP CONTAMINATION GOING ON NOW..
I LOVED BRITISH DANCE MUSIC AND HOUSE ..

Jan 30, 10 | 9:00 pmWOW! What a great site and I enjoyed reading through all the comments posted over the years. Sure brings back a lot of memories. I think I was probably one of few white girls in school that really, really enjoyed the disco era. I was still in high school during the best years of disco, but remember all the school and church dances. They featured a lot of disco, but also other forms of music like R&B, rock, pop, etc. The skating rink was the best though, mostly disco! Couldn't really skate or dance to anything but disco. I'm looking for a lot of the great songs of disco to put on my computer and my MP3 so I can fall in love with the music all over again.

Jan 26, 10 | 1:22 amHi there
I have just come across this site and I have to say, Watta blast!
I started DJing in clubs at the tender age of 15 in 1974 in Melbourne, Australia, one of the first I believe....and stopped in 2005, the '70's and 80's were my favourite era and the charts that everyone has put work into brings back sooo many memories of times a bit more happier and innocent than what we see now, hitting the floor for the sheer joy of dancing, and working out how to mix in '78 after seeing Mario Gonzalez in a club in '79.
just want to say thanks to the muso's and the industry
Cheers
Laurie

Jan 16, 10 | 3:30 pmDamn this is one of the best list"s I have seen to date.
My father in-law gave me a turntable. I just wish I had all the vinyl stolen
stolen from me. But I did start to make a coffin work out all the cobb webbs see how i do in a club?
-
Jan 07, 10 | 7:39 pmThank you so much for that compilation!
I am DJ'ing for a 70's party in San Francisco on Saturday night.
Seeing as how I have to play 6 hours of music from 7:00 pm until 1:00 am, I thought it would be great to have a disco universe of songs to choose from.
I've been collecting records since I was 13 years old in 1967, so I have an extensive vinyl record collection to choose songs from.
Thanks again for giving me something to work from!
Cheers!
DJ Mick Flaire, the extraordinaire

Think it over......Cissy Houston
Tout petite la planete.....Plastic Bertrand
Space Invaders....Player One
At Midnight ........T-Connection
The Runner.....The Three Degrees

Jan 04, 10 | 1:00 pmHi DJ Culla,
Yes those were all great clubs back in the day.I still have matchbooks from Disco Carlies,OZ,Studio 55,Scaramouche,etc.In 1978 I had a wonderful life as a 17 year old.During the week I worked at the Ritz Carlton as a busboy & then after working I would go for a workout at the YMCA & do curls for the girls.By the time Friday would come I would be all primed to hit those clubs mentioned above.Back in the early 80's one night I dressed up as a Rubiks Cube & had a blast at Septembers halloween party. My one dilema was that all the girls wanted to meet me however I was wearing a box & couldn't get close to anyone...ha ha.The Limelight in the summer of 1978 was hot !!! I still get goosebumps whenever I hear Patrick Adams " I'm a big Freak.I could go on & on.Why is it with life we get old too soon & smart too late ? Do you have any memontos from those years ? All the best.
-
Dec 29, 09 | 7:55 pmHey Daniel ! Disco Charlie's, Wow, a blast from the past ! Of course I remember it ! Along with La Bicyclette, le Baldequin, La bourgade (still around I believe), C'est Chic...(buddy of mine who owns "40-Westt" and "Qeue de Cheval" used to DJ there !) Remember the Oz ? Studio 55, September's ??
Good to see this forum is still posting !
Take care Daniel !

Dec 13, 09 | 12:35 pmHello to Sylvain & other fellow 1970's Montreal club scene members...

-
Nov 11, 09 | 12:15 amThat 700 list above contains so many memories of going to the "Odyessy" in LA. I was 19 back in 1977 and dancing from 9pm to 4am or 5am...non-stop. Then if you were 21 and older it was "Studio One" and if you like to show off your shirtless body..."Probe".
Then we'd go to Greg's Blue Dot for "Chruch".
The music was full of life then...and I fell in love once a month.

Nov 02, 09 | 12:56 amQuick Correction. NO GOODBYES by Curtis Mayfield was released in 1978......can't believe i spaced out and typed the wrong year!!!
-
Nov 02, 09 | 12:50 amNo Goodbyes by Curtis Mayfield was never mentioned by anyone here.
One of the most melodic, sophisticated and energetic song of 1982. I couldn't stop playing it at the various clubs i was working in Italy.
Thanks to all for bringing back so many great memories

Oct 24, 09 | 5:50 pmi'll tell you this....great list...and great add on's...i have been a dj now for 33 years...i started back in the day when all these disco songs where the new sound...the new genoration....remember that phraze....my heart and soul belong in the 70's....but i think we have coverd it...lets move into the 80's and make another list like this one...including dance, house, freestyle, breakdance, electro, hiphop, rnb, soul, and last but not least...funk...and electro funk....that just about cover the 80's dance music....don't get me wrong...i love my disco...but i'm still djing...and i find myself playing more and more of those 80's song's thrown in between my beloved disco...because the crowds are getting younger...and people my age 47 are staying home more.....so my format has changed a little these past few years....and this dj will never retire....i still love it after all these years....and if it where not for the dj's from that era...in those night clubs...there would never have been so many disco classics for you people to injoy...remember radio and disco back then never liked each other...and a lot of those radio stations where forced to change becouse of the people going to the disco techs...night clubs...and wanting to hear some of this music on the radio...remember...(((DISCO SUCKS)))........AND (((DEATH TO DISCO)))...all disco did was change it's name...to (((dance music)))...injoy the read...DJ Styyles

Ehhh I see nothing of them ?
-
Sep 26, 09 | 2:29 amIt's good to read about the younger generations (persons in their 20's- 30's)realizing that music today is "missing" an element. Disco music has a contagious quality that can never die... I was suprised that I did not see "Love Magnet by Freda Payne" excellent song!
-
Jul 30, 09 | 12:50 amI must somewhat disagree with some of the choices by the DJs as well as some of the comments posted. Quite a few of the songs on the list really aren't disco (although clearly it is difficult to determine what actually is disco).
As for the songs suggested by others, by main disagreement is actually about a group I love to death. ABBA is my favorite group, and as much as I love to see their songs on lists, few of the popular songs could actually be classified as disco in my definition. "Take a Chance on Me" in particular is a great song but far from disco.
On the other hand, the comment that ABBA never made disco is also wrong, as about half of their Voulez-Vous album was pure disco ("As Good As New," "Voulez Vous," "The King Has Lost His Crown," "If It Wasn't for the Nights," "Lovers Live a Little Longer" and "Kisses of Fire")
as well as some of their singles: "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and "Summer Night City," the former of which is PURE disco. Plus "Lay All Your Love On Me," "Me & I," and "The Visitors" do have some disco qualities.
Lastly, I would say that "Dancing Queen," although often considered a great example of pop-disco, only slightly borders on disco, although enough so for it to count...
This is all in my humble opinion as someone who appreciates music but is not an expert by any means...
-
Jul 16, 09 | 7:29 pmI love disco, am a disco freak, the list is great of course there are a lot of great songs that have been left out and for my own taste out of order, but the point is there are so many songs that the list was hard to make, give u guys credit.
For know I go walking in the rain (Eddie Kendricks).
in this Miami Heat wave (7th ave).
-
Jul 15, 09 | 12:21 ami love 80s disco ang the songs of ritchie family
-
Dec 02, 06 | 3:41 pm"Disco Duck", by Rick Dees or by Paul Vincent is OF COURSE a disco song. Quite evident.
"I Will Survive also"... :p
-
Dec 01, 06 | 6:14 pmLike it or not "Disco Duck" was actually
a disco tune. In fact it was the only song featured in the Saturday Night Fever movie which Rhino did not put
onto the sound track album. It should have been in there on that album
-
Nov 29, 06 | 2:38 am"Hong Kong New York ou Amsterdam, la vie la mort ça continue..." Good one heronymus!
Michael Fall, maybe the french song that you talk about is "Vol De Nuit" by Céline Lomez of something from Dalida!
As for the countdown one, I can't think of another song but "Instant Replay" by the late Dan Hartman.
-
Nov 28, 06 | 6:20 pmCant find any french balads that were played in the late 70's...Tu TEN Va or something close also a song that had the countdown of 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 in it.

-
Oct 09, 06 | 10:06 pmBlonde tunes were excellent to hustle
to, whatever the particular step.
However Blonde was a Punk Rock group.
Rapture, Heart of Glass and Call Me
were heavily played in Disco Clubs, but
in nearly all Blonde's other songs you
can hear the Punk. Amazing though how
many KTEL Disco compilations contained Blonde hits. KTEL was a bit whacked out
anyway because I have a tape by KTEL
called "Pure Disco" and it has
Baby Hold On by Eddie Money, which we
are pretty sure is NOT Disco.
-
Oct 09, 06 | 3:27 amHey TsaLaGiCelt,
No one is going to rip you. You bring up some good points. There are songs in this list, and in other lists that can be considered other than disco simply because of the "time frame". However, the 700 list seems to me a pretty accurate compilation of what was hot and was spun around different clubs.
You have to remember though that demographics played a key role in what clubs played. Just look at the comments between Sylvain and Frankee Cee. For the most part they agree, but what one city calls hot, another doesn't. You have to take into account also that technology changed the music sound also.
You mentioned Blondie's "Heart of Glass." True I personally would not call this "disco" per say, because it had none of the "orchestral backgrounds" that disco music at that time had. ( ie: the "Casablanca records feel") But, it was a great song to dance to and mix for DJs.
You have to remember that "radio-play" also influenced what people thought or perceived was "disco" as opposed to R&B or disco-funk etc. One might even associate a song that came out with the clothing style at the time and automatically label the song as "disco" ( polyester) or "dance" ('80s).
No matter what. A big THANK YOU goes out to all who have created DiscoMusic.com, and contributed to it. We all basically agree that this music is THE music. I, ( and Sylvain, see other comments) were lucky enough to live in a city that not only had tons of clubs, but also had specific radio staions that catered to this music. Many radio stations, both French and English aired live from clubs and we had a hard time deciding which one to listen to.
Ladies and Gents, keep your comments coming. It's good to see an old tune or obscure tune resurface and bring back so many memories.
Peace all, and in the words of Gary's Gang.... Keep on Dancing.
DJ Culla.

Oct 08, 06 | 9:05 amOkay, pardon me, but someone has to say this. This is a *very* sloppy list. At least half of the songs on the list are not true disco. Listen, people. There is a specific musical definition of what is disco and what is *not* disco. Disco has a specific rhythm and swing to it. There was plenty of true disco in the '70s, and plenty of dance music in the '70s that simply was NOT disco at all, but R&B, Soul, Pop, Pop/Rock, etc. There were several main musical forms at that time, probably more than during any other decade. People who actually lived and weren't just little children during that time and who know something about musical form know that most of what is real disco didn't happen until at least '76, and most ended by '82. Much music was cross-over between forms. I happen to care to get such lists of songs correctly categorized, because I like disco more than most of the other categories, though they are all danceable. Most of Abba's stuff is real disco, for instance, because those were the rhythms that they played. Kiss, however, was almost never heard playing disco. Most people in rock would not play it and ridiculed it. Yes, the Jacksons did do lots of disco. Prince, however, almost never did disco ("1999" is an exception, and even it only borders on disco, though if you want to consider it such, it is one of the greats of that genre). Such songs as "Erotic City", which is a great piece of music, has funk/rock rhythm, *not* disco. I guess most people here just want to melange everything from the '70s (and *'80s*, if you want to include "Erotic City") together. I am sorry. I remember *well* the '70s (I am 50). "Heart Of Glass" only borders on disco. Come on, listen in your mind. You'll hear the distinctive disco swing beat in "The Hustle", "Take A Chance On Me", "Y.M.C.A.", "I Love The Night Life", "I Will Survive", "More Than A Woman", "Hot Stuff, even "Disco Duck", but "We Are Family", by Sister Sledge is pushing it. It swings, but it doesn't have that characteristic disco rhythm. It's great R&B/pop dance music, but there are definitions to these things. Now, I admit I'm not a musical expert, but ask any real musician and they'll tell you that all the dance music you have been listing are from different musical forms. I happen to like the disco swing rhythm. I am sorry to say that most DJs and others who consider themselves experts, and especially ones who feel that they should be considered influential and important are not the best judges of what is and what is not disco music. They have too much hubris and pride, and they want their pet songs included though they themselves know that what they are putting down is not true disco.
It is like asking published movie critics what are the best movies of all time. They will usually list some effete art films that most people don't see, and wouldn't like if they did see them. The most mainstream they get is Citizen Kane, which is an overrated and overblown movie, rather boring, and one doesn't really ever care about the characters. Movies that they pan on, such as my personal favorite "Somebody Up There Likes Me" are the ones that make us stand up and cheer and also cry at the same time. The same is true of music. Don't ask a D.J., ask an unbiased person who is not in a position to influence others or be helped or harmed by what answer they give. We, the little people, know what is best, and we, the people who were there at the time know what was disco and what was "Mr. Big Stuff" (good song, but *not* disco -- it's R&B).
Okay. I've taken my shot. Now, tear me up if you wish to do so. I won't respond.

Sep 28, 06 | 3:53 pmI LOVED this list. I have been looking for a list like this for yrs. Kudos on including my favorite disco song HOT SHOT by Karen Young!!
I noticed one of my favorite disco groups is missing - i cant remember the full name. It was "Dr....the savannah band" Does anyone remember their full name? Their songs included Sunshowers, Cest Le Femme etc...
-
Sep 27, 06 | 6:31 amhow about "never let go" by eastbound expressway
-
Sep 09, 06 | 9:05 amGood point!
"A Lovers Holiday", "Searchin'" & "Paradise" by Change, EXCELLENT!
"Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" was also a great song by Tavares.
Lots of songs aren't on this list, don't get carried away for that matter... LOL
-
Sep 09, 06 | 3:48 amBTW Again,
You haven't even ONE Tavares song
on this so-called "best disco songs"
list. Lame.
Go ahead and tell me why.
What's the excuse going to be?
I need a good laugh.
-
Sep 09, 06 | 3:42 amBTW
I can't even believe that there are
NO SONGS BY CHANGE,.. in that goofey
list! Next thing you know some loon
will tell me that they weren't Disco!
Probably the best way to create such a list would be to put out as many if not every disco tune and then pick from there. I say this because there must
be a memory problem going on. Many of
the songs that I listed previously
were excellent Disco tunes, but were not remembered. How come? Don't give me
that not Disco crap either. If a group
made Disco tunes and the next day
was the UN-official end of the disco
tune era,.. that doen't mean all that
same groups following tunes were no
longer Dicso!
-

Aug 27, 06 | 11:10 pmLOL DJ Frankee Cee !
"Working my way back to you" and "Cupid" were released in 1980 if I'm not mistaken. You can call them both dance or disco, it's all good! No need for a debate here, unlike for George Kranz's "Din Daa Daa"...
Regards
-
Aug 27, 06 | 6:02 pmMinime
"Working my way back to you"
and
"Cupid..."
by the Spinners got heavy play at
the clubs in the states. These folks
will probably tell you the tunes aren't
disco even though the Spinners did
put out many early disco tunes.
-
Aug 19, 06 | 11:16 pmWhat about The Spinners version of "Working My Way Back To You Babe"? A great song in my opinion.
-
Aug 14, 06 | 9:58 amStill a great list.
-
Aug 12, 06 | 12:44 amSoy un apasionado de la musica disco y quiero comentarles que la lista de las 700 canciones disco esta muy bien aunque pienso que algunas buenas canciones deberian estar mas arriba y otras mas abajo.

This is an outstanding list, great job. I think I only miss one song, Tasha Thomas, Shoot me with your love.
-
Jul 28, 06 | 5:02 amWhat about "Don't Stop the Train" by Phyllis Nelson?!?
-
Jul 25, 06 | 2:47 pmi think the list is great however 700 is not going to cover all.many of my favorites were not there like frontline orchestra's, don't turn your back, lamont dozier's back to my roots and klein and mbo dirty talk. i hope they all qualify as disco there seems to be some disagreement in qualification among some people.and please let's not forget capricorn's i need love.
-
Jul 17, 06 | 10:49 amNo offense to anyone, but George Kranz is not disco. Call it what you want, if that makes you happy.
-
Jul 17, 06 | 10:34 amGreat list, but Company B and "Together in Electric Dreams"? What up? Let's leave the '80s out of this pretty list.
-
Jul 07, 06 | 1:07 amhello to all... 1979 was the peak of the disco music. how i wish that this year, 2006 would come out and revive AGAIN the disco music. how i wish that the songs of those greatest disco queens like Donna Summer, Roberta Kelly, Tina Charles, Anita Ward, lipps inc, kool and the Gang, linda johnson will again hear and play on the radio.
-
Jul 04, 06 | 5:05 amWOW, how awesome!!!
Looking for a disco song by Frankie Vallie and Four Seasons - used to love it - danced to it regularly in Toronto, Ontario, Canada - can't remember the name of it.
-
Jul 04, 06 | 12:22 amI don't know many of these songs -still seems like a good list except:
Crown Heights Affair - You Gave Me Love @ #637?
Something not right there.
Granted, tracks like "Dreamin' A Dream" didn't bode so well this side of the Alantic - just an observation
-
Jun 23, 06 | 8:15 amFrankeee Cee,
Being from Montreal, like my esteemed friend Sylvain, I would have to agree with him. NOT that I am in total diasagreeement with you though. Different cities, different "labels" given to the music genre, ( by Radio stations and/or clubs) means different interpretations......that being said,
there WAS a change in the music style. Never the less guyz, it's still great ! I prefer mixing the disco/dance music to what's out there today. We were ( and still are) great cities as far as disco music etc is concerened.
Keep the faith.
You can't beat this music !
Peace !
-
Jun 19, 06 | 2:25 amSorry DJ Culla,
His experience in Canada is totally
different than ours in the USA.
So he's not right in America.
Even the songs in the "top 700"
list are far off the from the top 700
that would be selected in U.S. cities. ( just take a look at the songs that I listed above. There is a substancial amount that I listed which are NOT listed by this Canadian list.)
As I said,...Disco Artists did not
give up their titles just because of some artifically created date. They were still disco artists singing disco after that date, and I don't see what is so bad about that anyway.
Dance Music and Disco music is one and the same here in USA.
They both had funk and the beat.
Where is the difference?
Where is
"Heaven on the 7th Floor" in that
list?
-
Jun 18, 06 | 2:25 amOh yeah Sylvain !
Live from the Limelight. You probably saw me on top of one of the speakers all night at Studio55 !
Viens donc danser c'est magique....Chez Oz ! Those were the days! I used to sell all the 12"s at Discus on the West Island.
This is an awsome site guys.
Still lookin for Foxy's "Party Boys"
Peace !
-
Jun 17, 06 | 5:27 pmgreat list, thanks much. Found a few great ones I had forgotten about - refuse to believe I'm getting older, music takes me back in the day - so many favorites - Honeymoon in Puerto Rico is one - great then and now its a great Samba!!
-
Jun 16, 06 | 5:19 pmHey what's up DJ Culla!
Unfortunaly, I've never been to <Chez Régine> since I was too young at the time. As a matter of fact, the first time I went to the Limelight and Studio55 was in late 1979 (I was 16 at the time). I wish I could have been to Régine, Oz and Twelve34. Disco La Folie was also great as I was told.
Around 1978, I use to listen to <Live from the Limelight> and <Twelve34> on CJFM in my bed.
A couple of years later, I deejayed at Studio 1371, Le Pot Disco and L'Évasion 15-20 in Chateauguay.
Gardez l'feeling!
-
Jun 16, 06 | 3:02 pmHey Sylvain, just thought I'd let you know,.......YOU are right !
It's all good Frankee Cee.
Sylvain knows what he's talking about ! Hell he probably was at "Regine's" in Montreal back in the day ! Peace !
-
Jun 15, 06 | 8:42 amYes, i was an avid hustle dancer in NYC - so i'm looking for the songs they played mostly in the clubs - here's a few more hustle oldies:
Find my way - cameo
la la la peach song - o.c. smith
sun sun sun
Dance a little bit closer
i have a bunch of hte classics on my ipod and i close my eyes and i'm back in the era (even if just for a few minutes) those were the days
any body else have any other from those times - the rare disco club songs?
-
Jun 14, 06 | 7:35 pmHi CAT,
At the top of your list is "Bye Love". That can only be the one and only Vinnie Peruzzi classic encore by 5000 Volts...right song?? I played it every sat night at 2 to finish up the club gigs..CLASSIC

-
Jun 06, 06 | 4:03 pmSo,...lets ask all those Disco Artists
that continued to produce Disco hits beyond that date if they realize that THEY were no longer disco artists and no longer producing disco BECAUSE IT WAS
Unofficially declared DEAD!!??
I don't think so. Disco took on a different sound, but it was not dead. It morphed.
-
Jun 06, 06 | 11:08 amGreat list. Disco lives in 2006, thanks to remixers Freemason and others. I don't believe disco ever died. Rock and roll is still around, but like everything else there are always changes.
-
Jun 05, 06 | 5:59 pmWell maybe the category "Dance Music" does not exist in the States...
But it is known that Disco died in 1980, I'm not making it, as a former Disco deejay I'm surprise that you are not aware of that (it's even mentionned in the film <Studio54>).
In 1980, New Wave arrived while Disco was losing popularity. Then came Neo-Romantic (remember Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, ABC etc...). Then it was Dance, every artist was doing Dance (James Brown, Tom Jones, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger etc...).
Then, around 1985-86, House Music was THE music heard in the clubs (Adonis, Chip E., Farley Jackmasterfunk, Ron Hardy etc...)
After that, Acid House and Techno begin popular and so on and so forth...
Finaly, all the club music that came out after 1980 which was not either New Wave, Neo Romantic, Pop, House or Rap was consider Dance NOT Disco.
If I follow your logic, Samantha Fox, The Thompson Twins and Rick Asley's music is probably Disco...which makes absolutally no sense whatsoever...
Disco=1974-1980!
That's it!
Which doesn't make it a bad thing (I LOVE DISCO myself! It's the music that I listen to most of the time!).
But can Dance songs of 1982-83-84 etc can be label Disco songs??? Give me a break!!!
-
Jun 05, 06 | 4:07 pmBTW, you never did explain what is it about those songs which you call "dance music" that makes them technically NOT DISCO?
I'm guessing that you have no meaningful answer or you would have said it already, as this is the 3rd time I've brought it up. I hope that you are not going to claim that everything after the artificial death of disco with a dance beat can't be called Disco. That date is not officially recognized
-
Jun 05, 06 | 3:55 pmThat's it I give up.
"Dance Music" is not a recognised
music catagory where I come from.
I've also never heard any Radio DJ
use that term on U.S. radio,..hence
I don't believe it is an official music genre.
If someone said the words "dance music" around here everyone would think Disco. In other words
they are assumed to be one and the same here. We're obviously
not from the same place.
-
Jun 04, 06 | 6:08 pmThe only reason why I am repeating myself is because you seem to have a severe understanding problem...I could tell you 1000 times that <Din Daa Daa> is DANCE MUSIC but still, you wouldn't understand...
So enough with this! You can think that <House Nation>, <Pump Up The Volume> and <Unison> by Céline Dion is also disco if it please you, it's all good with me!
-
Jun 04, 06 | 4:08 pm>>Finaly, "Din Daa Daa" is an >>EXCELLENT SONG as I >>mentionned, but then again, it >>is DANCE MUSIC, not disco.
This is the second time I am now asking you because you ditched the first time,...Just what type of music do you claim Din Da Da to
actually be? Are you ready to enlighten us yet? Is it rock? Is it New Wave? Punk? Pop? Well...?
>>I didn't say that the artists that >>you named at the beginning >>were or were not disco artists. >>All I said was that some of the >>SONGS by those artists are not >>disco songs but dance music >>songs.
Again,...You have not explained
your "technical" criteria for what makes these tunes NOT Disco.
You only repeat yourself.
So I am now repeating this question also. You are confusing me, and perhaps you are confused yourself.
I guess that's just a
difference between how music is viewed by Americans verses Canadians.
BTW most of the disco producers ARE NY firms. Canadian artists and producers are only resonsible for a
small percentage of Disco tunes.
You are aware of this,..I hope?
Montreal may be the capital of Disco as far as Canadians go,..
but NY is the international mecca
of Disco.
Some capital of Disco Montreal is,..
all the strugling Canadian artists came to USA and NY to MAKE IT BIG!!
-
Jun 04, 06 | 2:37 pmI didn't say that the artists that you named at the beginning were or were not disco artists. All I said was that some of the SONGS by those artists are not disco songs but dance music songs.
When I mentionned that "Bryan Adams = Let Me Take You Dancin' = 1979 = DISCO!", I meant that "Let Me Take You Dancin'" was a disco song, not that Bryan Adams was a disco artist. Same thing with Edwin Starr, get the point!
B.T.W., Montréal was and is still known as the world capital of disco music and "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio" was a hit here in MTL, not as much as "Contact", true, but still, it was a hit.
Finaly, "Din Daa Daa" is an EXCELLENT SONG as I mentionned, but then again, it is DANCE MUSIC, not disco.
Regards.
P.-S. To answer your question, Madona was doing DANCE MUSIC, just like the Pet Shop Boys, Dead Or Alive, The Thompson Twins, Hall And Oates, Propaganda, Prince, Platinum Blondes, ABC, Gazebo, New Order, Men Without Hats, Sheila E., YAZ, Duran Duran, Colonel Abrams, The Weather Girls etc...
-
Jun 04, 06 | 7:45 amBTW,
The criteria for what is Disco,...
should be based on what "crowd"
the particular tune was being aimed AT! (by the artist) If you don't want to make a Disco song
then don't make one that plays like one.
Contact was a disco song true, BUT I don't feel the artist was a firm disco artist. WAR was more like hard rock. That was Star's other big hit.
Any songs into the 80s that were
aimed at the "Disco crowd" were made that way on purpose. Except for some punk which occassionally found its way into the Disco clubs and crossed over.
If Din Da Da was not a Disco tune,... make me laugh and tell me what you think it was? In the USA we called it Disco.
Stop grabbing at straws.
-
Jun 04, 06 | 7:29 amSorry,
I don't abide by your analysis.
Adams had only 1 dance tune
1 dance tune=NOT DISCO
IMO Starr only had 1 decent
club song. "contact". That's it.
The others were not memorable and
not played very often in the one place where Disco was the most appreciated, NY City. If they weren't playing there, it was worth
being played. Sorry, that's truth.
#2 Just cause some middle America "Stoners" said that "Disco
was Dead..." doesn't and didn't make it so,...not just for me but many other too. So I don't recognize your criteria of that date or year being an official end to Disco. If that were the end then
what the he11 was Madona doing?
And don't say pop, because i won't stand for that rubbish.
-
Jun 04, 06 | 1:42 amThank you sooo much! You brought me back to the good old days. That was when music was music and clubs were clubs. I miss getting decked out and hustling. So many straight and gay clubs to go to. Everyone dressed to the 9s and knew how to dance. I am so glad to be an old head. Today's generation just don't get what going out to a club means. Our generation did. Thank you so much for keeping the dance generation alive and kickin. Believe it or not I still hustle. The disco era needs to make a comeback, but unfortunately it won't. But we still can have our memories and that no one can take away from us. So, here's to you and all of our disco generation fans both dead and alive. Keep On Dancing!! God Bless You Always & Forever!!!
-
Jun 03, 06 | 3:26 pmFirst of all,
I didn't say many I said "a lot". And if you want me to name them all it's all good!
Two Of Hearts
Din Daa Daa
Don't Go
Come Go With Me
Forget Me Nots
I Can't Wait
I O U
In My House
And maybe a few others...
Now what do these songs all have in common? They ALL came out after 1980, the year which disco was officially pronounced dead! And as I mentionned, after 1980 it's all dance music (which by the way doesn't mean that dance music songs were not played at every single club...).
Merci, Bonsoir!
P.-S.
Edwin Starr = Contact + H.a.p.p.y. Radio = 1978-79 = DISCO!
Bryan Adams = Let Me Take You Dancin' = 1979 = DISCO!
-
Jun 03, 06 | 2:33 pmI'm sorry,
Just what technically is it about those 2 songs that makes them
NOT DISCO? You'll have to explain that one to me. They were played
at every single club that I went to.
The Artists did produce other disco songs. Edwin star was a rock star
why is his song on ther list as a disco song? Bryan Adams was a rock & pop star also. Can you explain the technicalities behind your claim. You also said "many"
are not disco but only named two.
Were's the many?? And what does the year 1985 have to do with
with anything? I'm just not following you.
-
Jun 03, 06 | 3:25 am"Im Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking" by The Supremes
-
Jun 02, 06 | 6:11 amA lot of songs that you have mentioned DJ FrankeeeCee are dance music songs not disco.
For example, <I Can't Wait> by Nu Shooz and <Two Of Hearts> by Stacy Q were release around 1985 if I'm not mistaken.
As for <Din Daa Daa> by George Kranz, EXCELLENT SONG, but then again, not disco but dance music.
-

May 23, 06 | 6:09 amHi John (from the former M & K Disco Bar in Abury Park, NJ),
I was shocked & surprised to see your response up above.
We sure were lucky to be DJing during the early Disco period.
I remember how you pumped those "Ecstasy,Passion & Pain" songs, along with "First Choice". You were a real spin artist! You knew how to pack a dance floor & keep it hopping.
Do you remember playing the long version of Gene Pages song: "Wild Cherry". I never could get Atlantic Records to send me a copy of that "Disco Version'. They would only give me the album, with the short version.
Than in 1976, you were the first Jersey DJ I believe to play Faith, Hope & Charities: "The Year Of Celebration". I flew out to find the record, and got a copy in New York city from the record company.
John, remember joining the DJ pool up on, I believe it was Cookman Ave, in the old bank building?
I sure would love to get together with you & discuss the old Disco DJing days, whatever became of the M & K.
I remember you "very" well. You sure worked yourself to death at the M&K. Morning, noon & night, so it seemed. I did the same at Manny's Den.
I hope you see this message, and reply back.
Bobby "former" DJ

May 20, 06 | 11:13 amThis list is awesome!!!! It should be made into a cd set and sold!
I would be the first in line to buy it!....
something to think about, it would be a "Best" seller!
-
May 10, 06 | 10:36 amHi fellow disco fans! I'm only 25 but am absolutely infatuated with disco music and have been since around the age of 13/14! I compose & sequence music on a synth and have created quite a bit of my own disco! My last track was called "Nightflight To Boogieland" and was inspired by the front cover to Boney M's album of a similar name!
Great list, some real rare cuts on there - what I like to see!
Would of liked to have seen "Chika Boom" by Foxy on the list; such a great fusion of latin & disco!
Stay funky folks and keep the old Disco '45's rolling forever!
-
May 03, 06 | 7:19 amThis list is the best I've seen for a log time.Need to add "Gotta Dance" by Pacific Blue . thanks and check my blog at jffdj.com

Apr 19, 06 | 5:08 pmDisco fan here, one of the few still around in Mexico I guess!
LOVED THE LIST! Some of them, I don't agree, but oh well.... In general - GREAT!
A few of them I don´t know since they never made it across the south border of US.
How about Paul Jabara's "Honeymoon in Puerto Rico". One of the best disco songs ever.
Back in the late 70's, there was this group (can't remember the name) who had this song (can't remember the title) but it said something like:
"Baby let's do it, the French way"
This might be title - not sure.
Anyone can help?
And how about Tamara's "Everybody loves a Dancer". The best beat ever!!!
Would love to hear from other disco fans.
VIVA LA MUSICA DISCO!
-
Apr 15, 06 | 6:26 pmNO WAY would I have listed the first 10 records in my top ten. Much too eurodisco (soul-less) for my taste. Tracks 11 - on begin many of the good disco records.
And I thought this was for 70s music. How did some of these tracks from 80s get in here? Disco was music, not synthesized robotic junk. (Georgio Moroder not withstanding) and some of these very 80s songs do not belong on this list. JIMHO, of course.
-
Apr 15, 06 | 5:13 amAbsolutely love the list! Most of the songs were familiar to me, but some surprises too. My favourite disco songs? Hard to say, but maybe the following top 5?
1. Jingo - Candido
2. Girls - Moments & Whatnauts
3, Try it out - Gino Soccio
4. On the beat - BB & Q
5. Sunset people - Donna Summer

Feb 21, 06 | 12:03 pmHi,
What about Yvonne Elliman 'If I Can't Have you' and Vicky Sue Robinson 'Turn the Beat Around'
-
Feb 21, 06 | 3:50 amThis is a great site; many great memories. Thanks. I am trying to think of songs that were omitted. What about Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff"? Barry Whites' "You're My First, My Last, My Everything", and "Never Gonna Give You Up"? I also couldn't find these:Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting", the Stylistics' "I Can't Give You Anything But My Love", George McRae's "Rock Your Baby" and Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing". I was glad to find "Rock The Boat" which is usually omitted from lists of disco hits. Thanks again.
-
Feb 14, 06 | 4:17 amGreat List! I have a great collection of what I would call early disco - 1973-74. We were 16 trying to get into all the clubs but one of our first experiences was Harlows in Atlantic City. The dj was fantastic - I don't remember who it was - after awhile it was a guy named Jerome Palumbo from So. philly - also great. I have many 45's, LPs, and 12" records stuffed in boxes and have been collecting CDs over the years to replace them - it's been hard - how about these additions:
1. Who is he and what is he to you - Creative Source
2. Happiness is just round the bend - Main Ingredient
3. Good things don't last forever - Ecstasy, Passion, Pain
4. Sending out an S.O.S - don't remember
5. Crystal World - ??
6. Hijack - Herbie Mann (vs. Barrabas)
7. Rainforest - ?
8. Jump for Joy (maybe Biddu Orchestra?)
9. Life and Death in G&A - I wish I could find this one somewhere - have been looking for years
10. Honey Baby Be mine - I think the Jonses - (hit before Sugar Pie Guy)
11. Have a Good Day - Bohannon - this song always ended the night in Harlows and it was a great song, but it was sad because it meant the night was over.
-
Feb 13, 06 | 1:24 pmWhat about Chaka Khan's

7. Sunset People
8. Once Upon A Time

Feb 08, 06 | 9:30 amI am so pleased to have stumbled on to this "blast to the past" DISCO site. Many congrats to your attempt at tackling such a difficult task in compiling an all time "top 700"...there will always be something left out. Having lived thru those incredible magical times, one track comes to mind that is missing from your list that I am confident will hit some "emotional buttons"...
"Let me take you dancin"
Bryan Adams

Feb 01, 06 | 6:23 pmHi Randy!
I live in Montréal and have been to the Limelight 1254 Satnley manny times between 1979 and 1986!
I've heard some great deejays there like Robert Ouimet, Michel Simard, Pierre Mainville and Michel Landry.
Montréal will always be Canada's #1 Disco city! There are still great Disco clubs in MTL in 2006!
By the way I like your list, especially Bob McGilpin's 'Superstar' and Charlie Calello's 'Sing Sing Sing'!
Disco rules!

Machine/There But For The Grace of God
Deodato/SOS Fire in the Sky
Chaka Khan/Any Love
LTD/Back in Love Again

Jan 24, 06 | 6:33 amI was the "original DJ" from 1975 until 1977 at "Manny's Den" in new Brunswick, NJ.
The list of 700 is "fantastic"!
It is hard to believe, how many Disco songs were composed between 1973 - 1981.
Three of my early favorite's that John from the M&K in Asbury park should remember playing, as I played them also is:
1- When the Fuel Runs Out.
2- Dark Skin Blue Eyed Boys
3- Tom The Peeper
And let's now forget " Were On the Right Track Now"
I could go on & on. Those were the days my friend.
-
Jan 23, 06 | 1:53 pmMemories of "The Stardust", "Bentley"s", "Leviticus", "Studio 54", "Club 371", "The Silver Shadow", and many more. I feel like doing "the hustle". Superb list, but where's:
A Fifth of Beethoven - Walter Murphy and The Big Apple Band
Jam On It - Nucleus
Too Hot - Kool and the Gang
-
Jan 20, 06 | 2:48 pmMy personal faves:

ANYTHING BY GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIMENT
NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR: MIDNIGHT STARR
FREAK SHOW ON THE DANCE FLOOR: BARKAYS
I FEEL FOR YOU: CHAKA KHAN
SET OFF: STRAFE
DO YOU WANT TO FUNK: SLYVESTER

ANYTHING BY EARTH WIND & FIRE
THIS LIST COULD KEEP GOING ON ALL NIGHT SO I STOP HERE AND GIVE YOU A BREAK FOR NOW!
-
Jan 14, 06 | 1:56 pmWhat about walk right now of the Jacksons?? Mr. Giorgio moroder´s "chase"", father of the computer music!! Great list, i been looking for this for many years!!! Thanks!!
-
Jan 14, 06 | 9:08 amAll the freestyle stuff in the mid to late 80's was probably the best music in my eyes...
But the absolute best song of the 70's disco was romeo and juliet by Alec r. Constandinos
-
Jan 06, 06 | 3:15 pmOH sh*t, I was a club DJ in the early 80s while in school. I have half of these songs in milk crates in my basement right now.
Thanks a lot, now I'm going to have to go buy a turn table and mixer again and re-capture my lost youth...
What a great site!!!!
-
Jan 05, 06 | 1:24 pmSome on list are more pop, but its still a great list. To me, the true disco era was 1975 to summer 1980, with 1979 having the best songs. After that, its all dance music.
-
Jan 04, 06 | 6:28 pmAnd as for the list only about 200 songs belong there if that.
-
Jan 04, 06 | 6:26 pmAre you all kidding with some of these radio wanna be disco song's. Half of them have no percusion! Village people, james brown,abba- that is not disco. You can dance to the chili's-I got my baby back ribs song. That doesn't mean it's dance music.
-
Dec 31, 05 | 6:45 pmWhat ever happened to Take a Chance on Me by Watership Down. I am 65 years old and still have a lot of these songs on origional long play records. Big band, disco and ball room are still the best. Watch all the dance shows I can. Keep up the good work. Thanks
-
Dec 29, 05 | 12:09 pmFor Christmas, my wife got me the two soundtrack CDs for the movie "54". Best collection of dsico songs ever.
Highly recoomed for diehards.
-
Dec 29, 05 | 4:04 amLoved the list! Thanks for all the hard work. I got an ipod for Christmas and was looking for the names of all the songs I used to dance to in the 70s and 80s. Met my husband on the dance floor at Maxim's in Tysons Corner, VA in 1979! We still love to dance but can never find any clubs where people can "really" dance. Dancing without that club atmosphere just isn't the same!!
It's great to know there are others out there who feel the same!
-
Dec 25, 05 | 6:23 amStumbled by accident into the room...read every comment from all...read every one of the 700 listings and have to say even I , saw a few i can't recall while doing my show at Toronto's CKFM back in the early 70's . One group I played much was * dennis coffee band *.....sort of underground disco , just never seemed to make it big...I would have been surprised to have seen him listed , though , to me , and the calls i got at the station , suggested they were good . Great site !!...and as one baby boomer said in yer comments * we need to open the disco club doors again !....seems I can't recall ever seeing classy dressed guys and gals like that at clubs lately . The music was more then what the kids these days say of it . It had rythem and sopistication !...and ya could understand the words !!!...................disco does live !!!
ask my 23 and 27 year old kids !........
peace all.............................Larry
-
Dec 25, 05 | 5:06 amThere are some great, records in the 700 DJ Certified Top Disco Dance Songs list.
I'll definitely keep these in mind when in 2006 my, next 70's Dance Party Mix!
-
Dec 23, 05 | 12:55 pmThis website is fantastic and brings back a lot of memories. I was glad to see Patrice Rushen make this list (Forget Me Nots) .. my fave song !! I am a spinner from way back and worked some of the early clubs in Toronto (Brandy's, Richard's, Scotland Yard etc). One song that didnt make this list is ... IOU by Freeze !!
-
Dec 22, 05 | 5:44 amAbsolutely loved your website and reliving the past. However, please add to your 700 collection
"Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (Santa Esmeralda). Also, how can i purchase some of these mixes?
Disco Fan
-
Dec 20, 05 | 6:27 amNena,
While more music from the 700 Top Songs list are now out on CD, there are still some that have never been released on CD so you'll never be able to get them all on CD. Start your search on our Disco CD page which lists hundreds of various Disco CDs. It's at http://www.discomusic.com/cds-index

Dec 20, 05 | 5:50 amEureaka! I thought I was the only person stuck on disco! I found a vast selection of disco that I've been looking for for years. I've got to admit, I felt like I was a kid in a candy store when I came across the" 700 D.J.Certified Top Disco Dance songs". It's all the music I have been trying to find on my own. I truly believe what we cannot do alone, we can do together. Can someone please tell me how can I buy all of the songs on the "700" list I mentioned? I don't know how to go about it. Please bear with me and keep in mind that I don' know too much about computers and am interested in purchasing all that wonderful music on several c.d's...if they sell it that way. I live in Schnectady, New York and I NEVER, NEVER, EVER!!!! ... listen to the radio stations they have out here. I'ts the same 50 songs a day radio station. I'ts not worth my time to listen to and I need to listen to my kind ofmusic from the 70's. Besides I'm trying not to burn out the disco music I do own now. Pleare reply. God Bless.
-
Dec 08, 05 | 2:54 amGreat list guys but you left out so many, Love Injection, Deputy of Love, Big Time and what about Stephanie Mills, don't forget "it's all right" by Gino Soccio, and "Juicy"- How about Denroy Morgan, "I'll do anything for you. Dance on people........
-
Dec 05, 05 | 11:46 amIt would be interesting to 'even up' the contributions from U.S. and non U.S. DJs on the next chart, as it would look completely different. Unfortunately, I've always felt that this site (and this and other charts here) are too U.S. based and possibly too GAY club play based. I realise that you can only work with whatever raw material is to hand (i.e. those DJs that visit the site and contribiute a chart), but the results are too biased to be of any real use or particular merit, because of that.
A little more thought really needs to go into the next one and then I would contribute. As it is, any selections I'd put forward would have had little to no impact whatsoever because of the bias.
Voyage made a few popular Disco records, but not one of them was a number one or even a top ten track of all time! Never in a million years.
Otherwise, yes there are lots of good tracks here, lots of really odd also rans and some downright dodgy selections gaining higher positions than bona fide classics and anthems, with many true floorfillers completely left off. That can't be a healthy state of affairs.
-
Dec 04, 05 | 11:18 amAwsome list, can't think of any other top song, of course there's many other "good ones", but definetely, boogie woogie dancing shoes from claudja barry could be included guys. Thanks for the input to disco music.
Saldana.
-
Dec 04, 05 | 9:50 amGreat list, but I would definitely add the following:
Love Chant by Eli's Second Coming
Movin by Brass Construction
Boogie Funk (don't remember the artist)
-
Dec 02, 05 | 4:56 pmExcellent list!
Glide by Pleasure is the best tune. And "Other Galactic Funk" by Meco - wow, I was surprised to see that. I thought I was the only one who got off on it!
Chas Jankel's Ai No Corrida is my preferred version of that song.
Others I would add, though some lean more toward funk, are:
Bon Bon Vie by T.S. Monk
Disco to Go by The Brides of Funkenstein
D Train - You're The One For Me
David Christie - Saddle Up
Skyy - Here's To You
Stephanie Mills - Sweet Sensation
Sun - Sun Is Here
Patrice Rushen - Forget-Me-Nots
The Gap Band - Shake
Tom Browne - Thighs High
Billy Preston - Outa Space
(if Mr. Big Stuff can get on a disco list, I can get a little outside with Outa Space! :-) )
-
Nov 29, 05 | 12:23 amLove the list, but what about all the classics of Bohannon. If Donna Summer is the queen of disco, isn't Hamilton Bohannon the king?
many greetz from Belgium, where we are gonna disco this weekend in the Warehouse, Roeselare, Belgium. Its not Studio 54, but still we do keep the disco alive! Cheers!
-
Nov 25, 05 | 3:56 pmI just don't believe that Patrick Cowley is not highly rated on that list !!!
Only 600th for Menergy ???!!1
And what about :
- Megatron Man ;
- I Wanna Take You Home ;
- Do You Wanna Funk (with Sylvester) ;
- Tech-No-Logical World ,
and almost his greatest hits ???!!!
Cowley was a genius and his disco (electronic disco) is still heard like today's dance music !!!
A shame that he was not understood as a man far behind his (musical) time and today he is not given any importance and so few of us (Cowley's fans) are still here to remind him !!!
He did a revolution in disco music and it seems almost nobody noticed it !!!
Shame , Shame , Shame !!!
-

Oct 27, 05 | 7:58 amWhoever said that Mac Arthur Park is missing -- it's #18 on the list. I love this site -- I am in the worst possible position, there's a song I remember just falling about for at discos in the late 70s, and I can't remember the singer, the lyrics, the song, nothing. All I remember is lots of trumpets. :(

FOXY......Party Boys,
Freddie James "007 mix"
The list could go on & on ! Montreal was the scene and it's back even on the air with "Back Spin"! Maybe we could even re-open "Caesar's Palace" and roller boogie!
Is the Kebekelktrik still around??
When Alain moved to CIEL-FM it just wasn't the same! No more grand "Tra la la's" from "Coco" !
PS. You are so right about DJ extraordinaire Robert Ouimet!
Maybe we could get Michel Jasmin back to host a new "5 a 8" ! We could dig up some old 12" singles from "Pierre Musique" (or my old old old employer "Discus"
Keep it going guys !
-
Sep 23, 05 | 3:02 amWOW What a list, am 56 was the original DJ at the M&K in Asbury Park, NJ....One of the first disco's in New Jersey......That list sure brings back memories....

-
Sep 21, 05 | 11:49 amWow!!!
Le 5 à 8!
Either with the late Alain Montpetit (CKMF) or Michel Jasmin (CIEL), it was a delight! Not 2 mention Douglas Coco Léopold.
Man, those were the days in MTL.
As DJ Culla mentionned, the Twelve34 with Norman Neuschild spinning the tables was AWESOME if U liked classy Disco. "Disco OZ" was well known 4 it's jet set clientèle. Also, I will never forget Studio55 right beside Peel métro, <Chez Régine> and The Limelight with disc jockey extraordinaire Robert Ouimet.
The best of all is that those songs all sound great after these years. After all, isn't House Music & Techno a "dérivé" product of what the great Disco music once was...
Here's 10 other greats!
Bob McGilpin - Superstar
Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - Back Together Again
Booker T. & The MG's - Melting Pot
Vincent Montana - You Know How Good It Is
Martin Stevens - Midnight Music
Geno Washington - That's Why Hollywood Loves Me
Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - Still In The Groove
Jerry Knight - Now That She's Rockin'
George McCrae - Don't You Feel My Love
The Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force
Disco 4 ever!
Disco gets da best of me!

Sep 15, 05 | 4:14 amHey Sylvain !
Just by starting to read your list I knew you were from Montreal. Excellent list you provided ! Man, the memories you just brought back !!! Great site guys keep up the good work !
-
Sep 14, 05 | 2:23 amLove the list. Loved the 70s. I have many compilation CDs but usualy it's the same 30 or so songs. People my age (around 50) need places to go to be with people our age and listen and dance to the 70's disco. It was great and after all these years it still sounds great. I have great memories of that era!
-
Sep 12, 05 | 9:22 pmHow can you overlook Convertion's "Let's Do It?" Grace Jones "Pull Up to the Bumper?" (or any Grace Jones song for that matter). "I Don't Want You Back" by Ramona Brooks. "Jocelyn Brown's "Moment of My Life."
-
Sep 12, 05 | 7:04 pmI'm an original disco'er and I STILL love the songs after almost thirty years. I have discovered great new ones here I never heard while living through the era. The 700 song list changes depending on who is asked, but they are all fun and exciting to dance to. I learned the hustle while dancing to Native New Yorker, but bottom line is the clubs need to come back!!!

Sep 09, 05 | 5:25 pmYou guys forgot Nowhere & Swing by Hokis Pokis.

Sep 06, 05 | 3:26 amThese were all great songs but but we must not forget .. in my opinion the early early disco music from 1973-1976 . This was the start, and the music was super hip. It was born right out of the GREAT SOUL Music of the late 60's.
In my opinion the top 20 most important EARLY disco tunes.
1. Date with the rain - Eddie Kendricks ( this song was the number one dance floor attacker for many years)
2. Honey Bee- Gloria Gaynor
3. Love is the Message- MFSB
4. Zing went the strings - Tramps
5. Stoned out of my Mind- Chi lites
6. Welcome to the Club - Blue magic
7. Look me up- Blue magic
8. Newsey Neighbors - First Choice
9. Sugar pie Guy- Joneses
10. Time to get down - Ojay's
11. One night Love Affair- Ojays
12. Gut Level- Blackbyrds
13. Feel the need in me- Detriot Emeralds
14. Touch and Go - Ecstacy Passion and Pain
15. Ask Me-Ecstacy Passion and Pain
16. In the bottle- Gil scot Heron
17. Rock the Boat- Hughes Corp.
18. Dirty ol man- 3 Degrees
19. Stop and think- Tramps
20. The love I lost- Harold melvin & the Bluenotes
There are more but these are my favorites. We cannot forget the early DJ's who worked around the clubs nthe early 70's. My 2 favorite's were Paul Cassella , and Johnny Ace. they played mostly in the Queens clubs.
Regards everyone
Frank

-
Aug 04, 05 | 3:43 pmThe list is ok, but it's missing some good stuff like Brazilian NIghts by Gary Criss, One Love by Celi Bee, Evita, Looking for Love by Fat Larry's Band, Disco Samba, Hold Tight by VS Robinson. How could you forget When Love is New by Arthur Prysock???!!! I could go on and on, however, if I played Ring My Bell, Born to Be Alive, anything by KC & the Sunshine Band, Brick House, and others, I would be shot!!! AM radio disco music does not belong on this list!!! Since when did the early Diana Ross and the Supremes; Baby Love, etc, become disco. I know that everyone has their favorites and styles, but many of these songs will clear the dance floor.
Your big time dancers (NY), would not want to hear many of these songs.
DJ LAURIE C

Jun 08, 05 | 9:38 pmHey hey, everyone on this website, such impeccable taste -- because we all know what REAL MUSIC sounds like -- not this sampled, stolen, software-synthesized crap which fills the clubs and radio airwaves nowadays!!! Thank god we're all on the same page here!
Vince Montana, Cerrone, John Davis, Mike Theodore, Celso Valli, Ashford and Simpson... why does it all stop around 1983? I think what people like us have to do is to not only keep playing these songs, but use our own resources and knowledge to make new, viable pop / dance music. If you know how to play a piano or a guitar -- and not just one lousy riff -- then write some new music, please! Why could thousands of musicians do it in 1978, and why is pop music a ZERO today? Make it come alive again !! Ive got my guitar and bongos and synths in my new studio, ready for 2005... if people like us who deeply understand and appreciate disco can't do it, then no one can, i really believe that :-)))

-
Feb 19, 05 | 2:23 pmKudos DJ's an excellent list!! Noticed some obvious and some not so obvious selections...I tend to agree with Dean that DJ's would have an immune ear to the radio repeats.....but I thought it was odd to include Thompson Twins (though one of my favorite groups) and Prince's Erotic City (also a great song, but for this list?) Where's Sylvester? Miquel Brown (He's a Saint, He's a Sinner), Evelyn Thomas, Festival, Abba, Bobby O; yet Queen and Madonna's Borderline? Not Everybody or Physical Attraction? Oh well, I guess there can't be a perfect list, because music speaks to all a little different....but really...GREAT LIST!
Let's just bump up Macho's I'm a Man a couple of notches and consider AGENT 406 and Salazar's 1-2-3
-
Feb 10, 05 | 4:20 amsome songs are listed a few times . Do duplicates count in your "700"
-
Feb 05, 05 | 9:20 pmI have a theory that DJs, like all of us, get tired of the same-old same-old. They, me included, got pretty tired of the really big hits which got flogged on the radio (and everywhere), so they (me too) tended to seek out different material. This explains why some tracks which are very well known, and were big sellers, are way down the list. So, the order may be debateable, but the content makes me want to dance! Kudos to all involved!
-
Jan 30, 05 | 9:37 pmGreat list . Lots of Cerrone --- but not "Trippin' On The Moon " ? ---- also maybe I missed it ...long list ... but "Deputy Of Love" ?
-
Jan 27, 05 | 3:57 amStuff Like That - Quincy Jones (Featuring Chaka Khan)
-
Jan 25, 05 | 4:51 pmAs a DJ and one that provides Disco Theme parties to my clientele, I didn't see some of the largest disco songs ever that are requested all the time. Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me; both by ABBA. In the Navy by Village People and Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. Otherwise, the list is pretty impressive and as a matter of fact I found a few songs I didn't have. None of which have ever been requested but defintely ones that I could add.

Dec 30, 04 | 8:32 pm"#607 "Ai no corrida" is a theme by MASTER Quincy Jones.... NOT by Chas Jankel (This one did "Glad to know you" on 1983 excellent album...) as far as my memory and vinyls collection let me remember."
Actually Chas Jankel co-wrote this song and Quincy redid it for his album, but Chas DID put it out first. I have the actual promo that we were serviced with in the record pool.

Dec 21, 04 | 9:45 amThere are certain s

Best years of my life '73 - '89 that I will never forget. Every time I hear Disco Music it takes me back to a particular Disco & the friends I was hanging with. I was fortunate enough to be working out of Miami with a major airline with unlimited employee flight privileges. To NYC daily 8 non-stop flights, would get on the 10:00pm arrive in NYC about midnight and got to Studio 54, Tunnel, Limelight, Monster, Trax, and less famous smaller clubs some of my NYC friends would take me to and back on the morning flight departing at 8am. First class round trip employee fare was $12.00. I have a collection of 45's, 12"Mix & Lp's of just about every disco song played from those years. Even if I didn't care for a particular song, I would buy it. Plan to early retire this year, and one of my main projects will be cataloging all my records. Have managed to obtain about over 500 of my top favorites into CD's without buying them from friends & free download, can't afford the cost to replace them. I copied the awesome list of 700 and others mentioned and thought this is such a cool site I'd contribute to it tried not to duplicate songs posted already.
