Very interesting and suprising chart, Sheila with "Love me baby" rather than the classic "Spacer". This wide notion of disco prove the influence of this music, for yesterday and today. Excuse my bad english but I'm french;
Good work all. I've been looking for a list such as this for a while. I didn't see the Weather Girls (Just Us).
This is so cool! It's like taking a walk through time. I would have added "Thousand shades of blue", by the Dramatics and Lady, Lady, Lady
A great list of disco records but where is:
Rock Me / Ullanda Mcculough
Outlaw / War
Bad Boys / Wham
Girls are back in town / Risque

Impeccable taste. It's obvious that these selections are listed in order of popularity; not in play order, as that has everything to do with what's going on in the room. Stupid question: if this was compiled with a database or computer spreadsheet, could one input the playing times of all of these tracks and then come up with a grand total playing time for all 700 tracks (therefore informing us how long we'd need, minus overlap mixing one into the other, to do a countdown to include all of 'em in public performance, perhaps for charity?!)
Oh, by the way, I was very, very disturbed to see that you'd failed to include even one selection from "The Ethel Merman Disco Album!" (Just kidding -- save the rotten tomatoes)
Thanks for the hard work, guys!
Paul Lewis - a.k.a. Judydoggie

No Paul Parker? And where's Jump - Pointer Sisters? And Abba -The Visitors? my my!
I enjoyed singing a medley of songs as I scrolled thru the 70's. Loved it. And where is "Love Magic" by John Davis and "The Hustle" at 272? REALLY! Everyone has their own personal relationship with a particular song and I would have changed some of the rankings, but overall dude, you covered it pretty much. I give you 4 stars out of 4 stars.
It would be interesting to define at first the limits of "Disco-era", since me personally couldnt put Vicki Sue Robinson and Andrea True besides the Pet Shop Boys, and I'd check carefully... #607 "Ai no corrida" is a theme by MASTER Quincy Jones.... NOT by Chas Jankel (This one did "Glad to know you" on 1983 excellent album...) as far as my memory and vinyls collection let me remember. Otherwise there are songs I didn't heard for so many years and all of a sudden were like a BIG flashback! THANKS for a site like this! All we Seventies-born-and-raised children have a lot to be thankful!

A great site. A huge hit on the dancefloors of Sydney's gay scene in this period is noteworthy of mention. Rozalin Woods "Whatch gonna do about it"
Sorry, spelling error in my previous posting. It should read "Whatcha gonna do about it"
Here's another: Harmony - Suzy Lane
And another: Captain Boogie - Wardell Piper
As a DJ and one that provides Disco Theme parties to my clientele, I didn't see some of the largest disco songs ever that are requested all the time. Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me; both by ABBA. In the Navy by Village People and Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. Otherwise, the list is pretty impressive and as a matter of fact I found a few songs I didn't have. None of which have ever been requested but defintely ones that I could add.
Stuff Like That - Quincy Jones (Featuring Chaka Khan)
Great list . Lots of Cerrone --- but not "Trippin' On The Moon " ? ---- also maybe I missed it ...long list ... but "Deputy Of Love" ?
I have a theory that DJs, like all of us, get tired of the same-old same-old. They, me included, got pretty tired of the really big hits which got flogged on the radio (and everywhere), so they (me too) tended to seek out different material. This explains why some tracks which are very well known, and were big sellers, are way down the list. So, the order may be debateable, but the content makes me want to dance! Kudos to all involved!
some songs are listed a few times . Do duplicates count in your "700"
Kudos DJ's an excellent list!! Noticed some obvious and some not so obvious selections...I tend to agree with Dean that DJ's would have an immune ear to the radio repeats.....but I thought it was odd to include Thompson Twins (though one of my favorite groups) and Prince's Erotic City (also a great song, but for this list?) Where's Sylvester? Miquel Brown (He's a Saint, He's a Sinner), Evelyn Thomas, Festival, Abba, Bobby O; yet Queen and Madonna's Borderline? Not Everybody or Physical Attraction? Oh well, I guess there can't be a perfect list, because music speaks to all a little different....but really...GREAT LIST!
Let's just bump up Macho's I'm a Man a couple of notches and consider AGENT 406 and Salazar's 1-2-3

Hey hey, everyone on this website, such impeccable taste -- because we all know what REAL MUSIC sounds like -- not this sampled, stolen, software-synthesized crap which fills the clubs and radio airwaves nowadays!!! Thank god we're all on the same page here!
Vince Montana, Cerrone, John Davis, Mike Theodore, Celso Valli, Ashford and Simpson... why does it all stop around 1983? I think what people like us have to do is to not only keep playing these songs, but use our own resources and knowledge to make new, viable pop / dance music. If you know how to play a piano or a guitar -- and not just one lousy riff -- then write some new music, please! Why could thousands of musicians do it in 1978, and why is pop music a ZERO today? Make it come alive again !! Ive got my guitar and bongos and synths in my new studio, ready for 2005... if people like us who deeply understand and appreciate disco can't do it, then no one can, i really believe that :-)))

Still amazed at this site. Loved reading all the titles I danced to. Some favorites listed include: Move on Up by the Destinations, This time, baby by Jackie Moore, Forbidden Love, Madelaine Kane,Come into my heart, Rio de Janiero ( Gary Criss?), Sinner Man ( Sarah Dash?), and what about COPACABANNA? Loved that one. Just today someone called me and said: Her name was Lola... she was a showgirl... but that was 30 years ago! Oh, I was the one who answered my phone that way! No feathers in my hair, though!
Rio de Janeiro, that was Jay Vincent Edwards in '78, but maybe you have also right with Gary Chriss. I heard 2 different songs with this title

P.S. Where's "Easy Lover" with Philly Baley and Phil Collins???

I am only 23 years old, but these are the songs i grew up on. I was happy to see that groups like first choice get recongnized on this site. I do think that the order of some of these songs can be rearranged, and some songs are not as disco as others, but all and all pretty good collection. I wish todays music cam close.
And what about wonderful Karen Cheryl's songs ? They must be part of the disco charts.
Remember Sing to me Mama, Sweet Melody, Show me you're man enough, Tchoo tchoo hold on the line ...

I THINK DONNA SUMMER IS THE UNDISPUTABLE QUEEN OF DISCO... NOT TO MENTION HER ALBUM,, BAD GIRL, HOT STUFF, TRY ME I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT, THE WANDERER, COULD IT BE MAGIC...
Wow what a site, here I was surfing the net to try and find some to the very music you are all talking about and I find you in addition. If I may here is my short list; Groovin You - Harvey Mason, Double Cross - First Choice, Keep in Touch/Body to Body -Shades of Love, Must Be the Music - Secret Weapon, Play at Your Own Risk - Planet Patrol, and the one that is killing me to find WITHOUT YOU - Touch 1985.
WITHOUT YOU by TOUCH, hmmm I have that 12" in Puerto Rico I had to buy it when it was being played on a NEW YORK CITY MIX SHOW back in 1985!!! Great track!!!!But yes, I do have the 12"
The list is ok, but it's missing some good stuff like Brazilian NIghts by Gary Criss, One Love by Celi Bee, Evita, Looking for Love by Fat Larry's Band, Disco Samba, Hold Tight by VS Robinson. How could you forget When Love is New by Arthur Prysock???!!! I could go on and on, however, if I played Ring My Bell, Born to Be Alive, anything by KC & the Sunshine Band, Brick House, and others, I would be shot!!! AM radio disco music does not belong on this list!!! Since when did the early Diana Ross and the Supremes; Baby Love, etc, become disco. I know that everyone has their favorites and styles, but many of these songs will clear the dance floor.
Your big time dancers (NY), would not want to hear many of these songs.

These were all great songs but but we must not forget .. in my opinion the early early disco music from 1973-1976 . This was the start, and the music was super hip. It was born right out of the GREAT SOUL Music of the late 60's.
In my opinion the top 20 most important EARLY disco tunes.
1. Date with the rain - Eddie Kendricks ( this song was the number one dance floor attacker for many years)
2. Honey Bee- Gloria Gaynor
3. Love is the Message- MFSB
4. Zing went the strings - Tramps
5. Stoned out of my Mind- Chi lites
6. Welcome to the Club - Blue magic
7. Look me up- Blue magic
8. Newsey Neighbors - First Choice
9. Sugar pie Guy- Joneses
10. Time to get down - Ojay's
11. One night Love Affair- Ojays
12. Gut Level- Blackbyrds
13. Feel the need in me- Detriot Emeralds
14. Touch and Go - Ecstacy Passion and Pain
15. Ask Me-Ecstacy Passion and Pain
16. In the bottle- Gil scot Heron
17. Rock the Boat- Hughes Corp.
18. Dirty ol man- 3 Degrees
19. Stop and think- Tramps
20. The love I lost- Harold melvin & the Bluenotes
There are more but these are my favorites. We cannot forget the early DJ's who worked around the clubs nthe early 70's. My 2 favorite's were Paul Cassella , and Johnny Ace. they played mostly in the Queens clubs.
Regards everyone

You guys forgot Nowhere & Swing by Hokis Pokis.
I'm an original disco'er and I STILL love the songs after almost thirty years. I have discovered great new ones here I never heard while living through the era. The 700 song list changes depending on who is asked, but they are all fun and exciting to dance to. I learned the hustle while dancing to Native New Yorker, but bottom line is the clubs need to come back!!!
How can you overlook Convertion's "Let's Do It?" Grace Jones "Pull Up to the Bumper?" (or any Grace Jones song for that matter). "I Don't Want You Back" by Ramona Brooks. "Jocelyn Brown's "Moment of My Life."
Love the list. Loved the 70s. I have many compilation CDs but usualy it's the same 30 or so songs. People my age (around 50) need places to go to be with people our age and listen and dance to the 70's disco. It was great and after all these years it still sounds great. I have great memories of that era!
Hey Sylvain !
Just by starting to read your list I knew you were from Montreal. Excellent list you provided ! Man, the memories you just brought back !!! Great site guys keep up the good work !

I'm another young head with an old soul! I'm 23 years old but I have been listening to this music since...
First choice was poppin back in the day but what about my girl Alicia Meyers: I Want To Thank You!

What happened to First Choice? SalSoul Orchestra ft. Charo? There should've been way more France Joli and Loleatta Halloway tracks on there as well. What happened?
Great list but one of the most requested in the club that we hung out in was HAPPY RADIO by Edwinn Star, just wondering if anyone else was familar with the song or was it just a local thing?
Great List, but one of my all time favs is Sharon Brown's "I Specialize In Love." Ahhh.. what memories.
I know, Euro Disco was unfavorable out there, though I must to name a few:
Chilly
Eruption
Gilla
Arabesque
A La Carte
Ottowan
Boney'M
HOT R.S.
La Bionda
Falco
Laid Back
Sandra
Modern Talking
etc, etc.

Dudes how can you not put a good Kiss song. How about I Was Made For Loving You. Now what are you supposed to do when that comes on. You cant just sit there and look around. When this baby comes on you jump on your bike and start getting jiggy with it. Get the sissor fingers going and got rub up to some hot babe.
Come down under to Aus and we will chuck a shrimp on the barbie and ill so you some real music.
Peace Out Dudes

02.- Born to be alive - Patrick Hernandez
03.- Utopia/me Giorgio - Giorgio Moroder
04.- I can´t stand the rain - Eruption
05.- Stormy weather - Viola Wills
06.- Don`t leave me this way - Thelma
Houston
07.- I feel love - Donna Summer
08.- I don`t wanna lose your love - The
Emotions
09.- Are you satisfied? - Linda & the

Wow!!!
Le 5 à 8!
Either with the late Alain Montpetit (CKMF) or Michel Jasmin (CIEL), it was a delight! Not 2 mention Douglas Coco Léopold.
Man, those were the days in MTL.
As DJ Culla mentionned, the Twelve34 with Norman Neuschild spinning the tables was AWESOME if U liked classy Disco. "Disco OZ" was well known 4 it's jet set clientèle. Also, I will never forget Studio55 right beside Peel métro, <Chez Régine> and The Limelight with disc jockey extraordinaire Robert Ouimet.
The best of all is that those songs all sound great after these years. After all, isn't House Music & Techno a "dérivé" product of what the great Disco music once was...
Here's 10 other greats!
Bob McGilpin - Superstar
Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - Back Together Again
Booker T. & The MG's - Melting Pot
Vincent Montana - You Know How Good It Is
Martin Stevens - Midnight Music
Geno Washington - That's Why Hollywood Loves Me
Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - Still In The Groove
Jerry Knight - Now That She's Rockin'
George McCrae - Don't You Feel My Love
The Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force
Disco 4 ever!
Disco gets da best of me!

Have we mentioned the following?
Player One..... Space Invaders,
'Lectric Funk....Shangheid,
Theo Vaness....As long as it's love,

The list could go on & on ! Montreal was the scene and it's back even on the air with "Back Spin"! Maybe we could even re-open "Caesar's Palace" and roller boogie!
Is the Kebekelktrik still around??
When Alain moved to CIEL-FM it just wasn't the same! No more grand "Tra la la's" from "Coco" !

Maybe we could get Michel Jasmin back to host a new "5 a 8" ! We could dig up some old 12" singles from "Pierre Musique" (or my old old old employer "Discus"
Keep it going guys !

Whoever said that Mac Arthur Park is missing -- it's #18 on the list. I love this site -- I am in the worst possible position, there's a song I remember just falling about for at discos in the late 70s, and I can't remember the singer, the lyrics, the song, nothing. All I remember is lots of trumpets. :(
spent most of my life in discos all over the world ,top five disco,s ive been in are as follows,1 studio 54 2 paradise garage, 3 reflections & ziggys in middlesbrough, 4 the goldmine at canvey island ,and last but not least ,the loft at 99 prince st ,not as such a night club but the best music ive ever heard ,period ,my top ten disco tracks are as follows, note! these can change weekly as i gig at small exclusive private parties and am allways asked for classics ,so here goes,

I just don't believe that Patrick Cowley is not highly rated on that list !!!
Only 600th for Menergy ???!!1
And what about :
- Megatron Man ;
- I Wanna Take You Home ;
- Do You Wanna Funk (with Sylvester) ;
- Tech-No-Logical World ,
and almost his greatest hits ???!!!
Cowley was a genius and his disco (electronic disco) is still heard like today's dance music !!!
A shame that he was not understood as a man far behind his (musical) time and today he is not given any importance and so few of us (Cowley's fans) are still here to remind him !!!
He did a revolution in disco music and it seems almost nobody noticed it !!!
Shame , Shame , Shame !!!

Love the list, but what about all the classics of Bohannon. If Donna Summer is the queen of disco, isn't Hamilton Bohannon the king?
many greetz from Belgium, where we are gonna disco this weekend in the Warehouse, Roeselare, Belgium. Its not Studio 54, but still we do keep the disco alive! Cheers!

Excellent list!
Glide by Pleasure is the best tune. And "Other Galactic Funk" by Meco - wow, I was surprised to see that. I thought I was the only one who got off on it!
Chas Jankel's Ai No Corrida is my preferred version of that song.
Others I would add, though some lean more toward funk, are:
Bon Bon Vie by T.S. Monk
Disco to Go by The Brides of Funkenstein
D Train - You're The One For Me
David Christie - Saddle Up
Skyy - Here's To You
Stephanie Mills - Sweet Sensation
Sun - Sun Is Here
Patrice Rushen - Forget-Me-Nots
The Gap Band - Shake
Tom Browne - Thighs High
Billy Preston - Outa Space
(if Mr. Big Stuff can get on a disco list, I can get a little outside with Outa Space! :-) )
