CD REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

"Open Book" is Evelyn "Champagne" King's first new album in around a decade and produced by Preston Glass who had major success writing songs for Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin.

One of the things that first strikes the listener is that Evelyn King is still relevant and can keep up with the times. Her voice is strong and gutsy with no masking studio effects (a la Cher...) so what is heard is exactly what one would hear at one of her live concerts, which she still performs.

"Skills" is the lead off track here and the one sure to get airplay as it is "tough enough" for today's Hip-Hop crowd yet features King's smooth yet powerful R & B vocals and it's just so catchy. This is the way modern R & B should be. The album closes with an extended remix of "Skills" yet retains its feel without destroying the original feel of the song-just like in the Disco days when a remix didn't mean a totally different song.

The second track "Whole Lotta Yum Yum" may sound like a funny title for a song, but this slower tempo song simply works and shows off Evelyn's vocal delivery.

"The Dance" is delivered in two flavors; an album version and an extended remix. This could very well be the second single from the album as it appeals to today's musical sensibilities with its solid groove yet maintains Evelyn's classy and powerful vocals.

The rest of the songs on "Open Book" stay true to Evelyn King's philosophy, "It is important to me to keep it real. Unlike many singers today, I am not a studio creation who can not pull it off live in the studio."

Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Open Book" is due out in stores on August 28, 2007 and should be checked out by those who yearn for quality R & B.

I just got turned on to this CD today at WalMart. I never heard of any new music from Evelyn "Champagne" King so I was surprised to stumble upon this CD. I listened to it online and I agree that she sounds great. Why is the mainstream sleeping on this???

is "Standing on the Rock of Love" the same song Aretha Franklin did on the "BeBe's Kids" soundtrack?
