CD REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

Spunks "Tightne It Up" was originally released in 1981 on Gold Coast Records out of Florida. It's a hard-edged funk/R&B production by Jesse Boyce that was next to impossible to find unless you shelled out some big bucks, but is now out on CD courtesy of Vinyl-Masterpiece.

Jesse Boyce is best known for his work with Lorraine Johnson, Frisky, Saturday Night Band, Constellation Orchestra while Rich Tufo with "Think Before You Stop" by the Notations along with Curtis Mayfield's Curton label.

This album will appeal to those that are into the post 70s funk, jazz and R & B. Another fine album that has seen the digital light of day thanks to the efforts of Vinyl-Masterpiece.

    Hi Bernie,
This Jimmy Levine again and would appreciate it if you would correct you notations at the top of the page. s**** was not produced only by Jessie Boyce. Jimmy Levine and Richard Tufo are equal producer's for the s**** Project. Please make the correction to reflect the proper infromation.

I am Jimmy Levine the "L" in BLT. BLT stands for Boyce,Levine and Tufo. that would be Jessie, Jimmy , and Richard. Jessie and Jimmy Levine wrote all of the songs on the only s**** album. The name s**** was apart of a Rap lyric I used in the song Jessie Boyce wrote (Get What you want). I Jimmy Leivine performed all of the raps on the album Jessie Boyce preformed the lead on all except one track and the only other male lead on the track was performed by Randy Guidry and Randy you me know Jimmy, you did one hell of a job on "Hot Flashes". We had big fun back then. Before Jessie,Jimmy and Richard recoreded the s**** Album we produced the final album by the group (TTF) TODAY, TOMORROW and FOREVER. We had the best enginer in the record busniess at that time Rodger Anfersen I might have spelled the last wrong. Never the less Rodger was the best person to work with. We had many late nights and BIG fun reording the s**** album. Michael White the drumer for Maze sence 1884 who is still my best freind today worked hard on the s****. We called him Michael Funk Foot White. Michael White Co-Produced my new cd. Randy we use to eat the Sizzler's from time to time. Marv Stuart rented an apartment for Jessie and Jimmy(me)so when Jessie was in town he could bring his wife from time to time. Sara Melendez, Michael Marqulise work in the front office during that time.
Randy if you read this e-mail please give me a hella at jimg1@mail.com or check me at www.myspace.com/jlevine07 I have a new cd ouy 'Share My Love"by Jimmy Levine on Thump/Univrsal Records and I'm #1 in the UK it was released Dec.12 2006.

    Bernie,

I was signed to Goldcoast by Marv Stuart as an artist and staff producer and a member of a team of producer/artists led by Rich Tufo that subsequently created the s**** product among other projects for the label. I shared the lead and background vocals with Jimmy Levine and Jesse Boyce on s****'s "Tighten It Up" LP. I solely sang lead and shared background vocals on "Hot Flashes" and shared lead, background vocals and creative input on the other tracks.
It was disconcerting to not be credited on the first pressing for my performances and for the role I played in this great product. At the time, it was discussed, and I settled for a promise of a correction in subsequent pressings and a letter stating the same. There was no malice in the omission, it was a business decision that had a negative impact on me. Still, as I have stated before, Rich Tufo is amazing and Marv Stuart is a brilliant industry player with the uncanny ability to mine talent. I thank him for allowing us to work with Curtis Mayfield. It was truly a highlight of my life.
There were other projects that were spawned by that team and has the same feel including the vocal group TTF (Today, Tomorrow, Forever), product of which I contributed vocals.
Again, I share this information for the integrity of the product and to set the record straight for those interested. It is certainly not the only thing I have contributed to the recording industry.
I am more than willing to discuss it further for those interested.

    Randy,

Thanks so much for providing all the extra info. What was your role in the Tighten It Up album by s****? Also, would you be so kind as to provide a list of those not properly credited so it can be posted here?

Gold Coast Records was operated out of the Curtom Studios in Chicago Illinois on Lincoln.

The Credits on the Gold Coast Album entitled "Tighten It Up" does not accurately credit those who were an important part of the sound and finished product. Marv Stuart changed course on this product that resulted in contributors/musicians/vocalists not being credited. This was because the album cover was printed prior to the finished product and there were not enough funds to redo the art work. Marv promised to correct the problem in subsequent pressings and issued a letter stating the same of which I have. I state this for those interested in the integrity of such great product. You can contact me for further details. It was a great project from great visionaries. Rich Tufo is one of the most talented producer/arrangers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with and I credit him for teaching me what a record is supposed to sound like.
