NOTES:
A new label out of New York called Candystorecords has embarked on an ambitious project to compile some of the greatest, but ignored on compact disc Disco dance classics from the late 1970s and 1980s. The ongoing Mighty Real series spans 15 volumes and in this edition moves on to the "Morning music" sub-genre popularized by clubs such as the Saint, 12 West, Trocadero Transfer...
The liner notes describes morning music as, "big and spatial. It created a beautiful holding pattern filled with songs of love, gossip, soul searching and interpersonal ultimatums - cleverly underscored with an easygoing beat. Heard towards the end of a night out, the metaphor of a new day wasn't lost on the writers and creators of morning music, helping it sustain a devoted following..."
What's interesting is how Candystorecords makes a distinction between Sleaze and Morning music: "For a number of years now, Morning Music has been lumped together with "Sleaze". Although both are heard towards the end of a night out, they are separate entities. Morning Music is down-tempo yet big. It can be pretty or even haunting. A compelling story is usually told, without the sass of Sleaze. Morning Music has qualities that make the brain happy - a great appetizer to Sleaze, which makes the body happy."
What's nice about morning music is that it can entail various styles of music and this CD follows that formula so if you enjoyed these long prolonged sets with no boundaries then this CD is sure to please. Standouts include long versions of "Was That All It Was" by Jean Carn and "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" by Thelma Houston.
This CD is available exclusively through the CANDYSTORECORDS website.
