This (presumably early '90s) CD reissue of Chic's often overlooked first album is well worth it if you come across it. Although at this time Chic was still, on the surface, a fairly anonymous studio group (that would change the following year) the grooves are anything but.
With the unmistakable Chic sound in place, even on this album, they were a cut above most similarly anonymous projects. "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Everybody Dance" were brilliant disco records and only a sign of things to come. Much of the album has a lighter, more sublime groove; most notable being "You Can Get By", "Est-ce que c'est chic" and "São Paulo" to name a few. Norma Jean Wright (who's voice I love) was their principal female vocalist at the time, she takes the lead on "Est-ce que c'est chic" and "Falling In Love With You" (a pedestrian, but pleasant ballad). Perhaps just short of being classic, but still an excellent, enjoyable effort.
