Was driving in the car and heard, after probably 20 years, "Papillon." Consulted this website and was told that the great voice I heard singing it was, indeed, Chaka Khan. I'm not an enormous fan of Chaka Khan. Always thought she could use a little more restraint.
This album proves me wrong. Bought the whole thing just to hear "Papillon" again and was delightfully surprised to hear "Clouds." I'd danced to that song so many times; as well as "Our Love's In Danger." (Both tunes penned by Nick Ashford and Val Simpson -- in addition, the liner notes include Cissy AND Whitney Houston as background vocalists on "Clouds")
I adored Chaka's romp with the late, great Ray Charles doing "I'll Be Good To You" on Quincy Jones' "Back On The Block." It's been in rotation in two of our bars quite regularly and the customers are always asking staff "who is that singing with Ray Charles?" When I add "Clouds," and "Papillon" to the mix it'll really screw with their heads.
A peculiar karmic coincidence -- "Papillon," according to the liner notes, peaked on the Billboard R&B charts (at 22, but good enuf) just a few days before my birthday in 1980 -- one of the most memorable ones I ever had - a big party at a BIG club -- and I vividly recall dancing to that tune that evening.
