CD REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

The Thank God It's Friday motion picture soundtrack originally appeared in 1978 as a three-record vinyl set with tracks by Motown and Casablanca artists. While it never gained the same popularity as Saturday Night Fever, it does contain several good songs that any Disco music collector would love to own including a rare bonus track by Donna Summer called "Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus).

TGIF : Thank God It's Friday appeared on CD twice. The first edition from the 1990s edited most of the songs to fit on one CD. The second edition, featured here, is remastered for clearer sound and contains the original length tracks on TWO CDs. Since both editions used the same cover art you'll need to make sure you are getting the one that says "Remastered" and is a double CD set.

I had fun looking at movie errors like the one
where one of the chicks got coffee spilled on her dress
from the dashboard. We can actually see a blond person hiding in the back seat pulling a cord to force the spill
the kind of detail you won't see the first time at the movie.

I was disapointed too with the quality, no additionnal material. Nothing compared with the remasted Dvd of Top Gun with really recent interviews with Giorgio Moroder, Harold Faltermyer, Kenny Loggins, Berlin, etc

  • Salsoul1975

Soundtrack to the 1978 movie guest starring Donna Summer and the Commodores. It was a joint collaboration between Casablanca and Motown records, although practically every song on the album is on the former label (naturally, since it's the label the album appears on). Some good cuts here; Donna Summer's "Last Dance" won an Oscar for Best Song, and it's in its original 8:08 version. Summer is represented thrice in this two-disc set, including the driving "With Your Love" and her rendition of Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin's "Je T'Aime (Mon Non Plus), which was actually a bonus 12" single in the original vinyl release. At 15:47 in length, it's a full album side of mystical instrumental arrangement, whispers and coos.

Motown is represented with some average material here; not as potent as what Casablanca offered. The Commodores' "Too Hot To Trot" is okay, Diana Ross' "Lovin', Livin' And Givin'" is given the Giorgio Moroder treatment; metronomic electronic bliss and all, and Thelma Houston's "Love Masterpiece" is a frenzied workout straight out of the "Dance Yourself Dizzy" file. The rest of the cuts can only be enjoyed when you put it in the perspective of the movie it comes from. Apart from that, they're only mediocre uptempo numbers.

Also, look close and you will see Debra Winger in her first movie role.

Paul Jabara won an Oscar for Best Song of 1978 for "Last Dance" which was from Thank God It's Friday, sung in the film by Donna Summer.
