Alec R. Costandinos has finally done what many of his fans have been requesting for years: reissue Romeo and Juliet and The Hunchback of Notre Dame on compact disc.
Mr. Costandinos is also adding a unique twist by thwarting bootleggers and making the CDs true collector's items by assigning each CD a serial number along with a certificate of authenticity.
A quick history on this project from Alec himself:
For Romeo I couldn't find the Master multi track tapes. For The Hunchback, I couldn't find Esmeralda's dialog. Eventually though, I found ALL the tapes. I tend to blame my irresponsible youth for not having taken better care of my production tapes. For better or for worse I must have done something right because in the end (though dispersed between two continents) I did find all the material.
A great amount of time was invested in bringing the Master tapes back to life. As expected, some individual instrument and vocal tracks did not survive as well as some others. That's just the nature of three and a half decades old 2-inch Ampex magnetic tape. I'm sure you'll let me know if I succeeded in my enterprise. Thank you for your support.
If you've been following the evolution of this project for the past few months, please be aware that these new mixes are not meant to be replicas of the originals. Such an exercise would have been unrealistic. They are new (and relatively close) interpretations using only the original instrumentation and vocals. The BPMs will not match (Romeo and Juliet was accelerated electronically and arbitrarily during the Mastering process in the 1970s and we never kept a record of the exact acceleration percentage) and neither will the overall sound. Choices were made in terms of what should be heard more, what should be heard less and what should not be heard at all. In essence the tracks are the same, but different.
As indicated in the quote above from Alec, he was able to get all the original tapes to reconstruct this reissue, yet it's just that, a reconstruction. This means for those with keen ears, it will sound almost like an alternate take or alternate mix as there are subtle differences. This new CD release is NOT a remix or modern day update! This is the original music! A good analogy would be a DJ who creates a mix set of ten songs and then years later uses the same playlist and records to recreate that set. It's the same records..., but there will be slight differences in timing...
What Costandinos did when he embarked on this project was to painstakingly take all the original raw components and put it all back together thirty years later. No small feat since he could have taken the easy road and just rip a vinyl copy and release that instead. Kudos to Alec for taking the high road!
Having said the above, the audio quality is amazing and sheer nirvana as Alec went back to the original master tapes for both albums. Simply breath-taking to hear on a good sound system or headphones. I will have to take issue with the artwork, which is simply hideous! I assume he didn't have permission to use the original artwork and that's understandable, but as one can readily see in the above scan, he could have done much-much better. Thankfully Alec does include a multi-page booklet in English and French with details on the making of each album. In addition my copy came in a black velvet pouch with the "AC" logo on the bottom right.
This one of a kind compact disc reissue of Romeo and Juliet along with the Hunchback of Notre Dame can only be purchased directly from Alec R. Costandinos through his website. There is no doubt that this will become a true collector's item if it hasn't already.
