MUSIC REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

A Complete Introduction To Disco is a new four compact disc box set newly released by Universal Music's European division. The aim of this deluxe various artists compilation is to give the listener a general overview of Disco music in a somewhat chronological order as disc one kicks things off with tracks from the late 1960s and early 1970s and on through the fourth disc which pushes into the 1980s.

As most Disco connoisseurs know and accept, Disco music came in many flavors as songs had tinges of R & B, Jazz, Euro, Pop, Urban and more. There's a broad mix of music that represents the Disco style and the compilers have tried to showcase the diversity in sound while clearly showing its R & B roots. This should really serve as a wake up call to those who insisted that Disco all sounded the same. Of course it wasn't and the four discs clearly illustrate Disco's diversity in sound.

Most of the songs included on this compilation have appeared elsewhere and it's probably safe to say that this is not for the person who has everything. Instead A Complete Introduction To Disco is geared to those diehard fans who haven't amassed a large Disco collection yet or to those newly indoctrinated Disco converts who just want to hear REAL dance music in a comprehensive and well thought out way. What's really nice is that this set's playlist sounds much better than what you may first think. By that I mean that some may find the tracklisting pedestrian, but in fact it definitely is NOT. It flows beautifully showcasing Disco's rich tapestry of sound.

The boxset comes packaged in a hardcover book that houses a 35-page booklet with notes on each song, photographs and label scans from the original vinyl records. The inner left cover houses two compact discs while the right inside cover holds discs three and four. The outside dimensions are similar to those of Blu-Ray and DVD sets so you should have no issues storing it with other media. My only gripe with the packaging is that the discs on each inner cover overlap thus requiring you to remove disc one to get at disc two and removing disc three to get at disc four.

Give this package serious consideration if you are looking to fill in holes in your collection as there are some great early '70s Disco tracks that are hard to come by especially with the clean sound offered here or to give as a present to your favorite Disco fan. A Complete Introduction To Disco is sure to be a winner at your next Disco themed party as well.
