MUSIC REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

What do you get when you fuse dance, R & B, afro beats, island chants and rhythms along with quirky lyrics and push Kid Creole into the 21st century? Answer: Dancing For The Cabana Code In The Land Of Boo-Hoo which is the brand new album by the New York born Puerto Rican performer Coati Mundi a.k.a. Andy Hernandez. This is Coati Mundi's first album in around twenty years.

What's real likable about Dancing For The Cabana Code In The Land Of Boo-Hoo is its sense of being spontaneous as if Coati Mundi is ad-libbing and improvising. It's free-formed and sounds so unplanned with no inhibitions. Coati Mundi is just doing what he wants to do and that is, be a real entertainer. Even his work with Kid Creole hinted at some planning that was refined over and over. This is not the case on this new album and that is a good thing as if Coati is not working within the confines of any boundaries.

When we first hear Voyage LIbertad To The Boat Dance we hear Coati Mundi blurt out "Libertad" repeatedly and it almost sounds hookey, yet it reels you in and then Coati starts veering into different directions within the song. He seems to be comfortable where his music and experiences have taken him. He seems to be relieved that he can now do what he feels he wants to do and not "one-up" the previous Kid Creole album. While we can hear influences from Kid Creole and even Doctor Buzzard's Original Savannah Band on Dancing For The Cabana Code In The Land Of Boo-Hoo, it's nothing like his previous work! This new album is way different and Coati is exploring uncharted territory. One thing that Coati Mundi has retained is his penchant for Spanglish-mixing English and Spanish, but we even occasionally hear Portuguese and some other languages creeping in on some of the songs.

The more I listen to Dancing For The Cabana Code In The Land Of Boo-Hoo, the more I like it. Make no mistake, this is not for everybody. If you don't have an open mind or if you only want to relive his older music then you are out of luck. Coati has moved on and is a better performer for it. Either you allow yourself time to get it or you don't.
