MUSIC REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

Backbeats: That Driving Beat - 60s & 70s Northern Soul Stompers has just been released and features thirty (30) tracks that helped define the Northern Soul scene in the U.K.

You may ask, what is Northern Soul? According to Wikipedia:

Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged from the British mod scene, initially in northern England in the late 1960s. Northern soul mainly consists of a particular style of black American soul music based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Tamla Motown sound. The Northern soul movement, however, generally eschews Motown or Motown-influenced music that has met with significant mainstream success. The recordings most prized by genre enthusiasts are usually by lesser-known artists, and were initially released only in limited numbers, often by small regional United States labels such as Ric-Tic and Golden World (Detroit), Mirwood (Los Angeles) and Shout and Okeh (New York/Chicago).

What's interesting about Northern Soul is that a large number of Disco tracks can trace their roots to this genre as some are note for note covers or variants thereof. For example Pattie Brooks' Don't Make Me Wait originally was done Philly veteran, Bunny Sigler and appears on this great CD. Another is At The Top Of The Stairs from 1967 by The Formations which was later covered in a very Philly and Salsoul Orchestra style by Wild Honey as the first TK Records 12 inch release in 1976. Parallels can be easily drawn between Northern Soul and Disco with the biggest being that they are both fast paced and feel good music made for dancing.

I was really happy to receive That Driving Beat - 60s & 70s Northern Soul Stompers as it serves as a history lesson of sorts and highlights some of the lessor known Soul acts of the 1960s and 1970s. The music on this disc is so upbeat and happy and virtually unknown to me. A perfect introduction to the music and a highly recommended purchase.

A little background on the Backbeat series as told by the compilers:

Culled from the wealth of the Demon Music Group controlled catalogues, the Backbeats repertoire comes from the best collection of independent labels in the world including Hi, Cream, Philadelphia International, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Streetwise, Idlers, Warlock, Easy Street, Sam, Chi-Sound, Trax, Philly Groove, Jewel, Paula, Ronn, Ace, Tribe, Invictus, Hot Wax, Music Merchant, Amazon and numerous other catalogues which have shaped the history of Black Music and Dance Culture over the years.

The first ten (10) albums in the Backbeats series have been designed by veteran compiler Ian Dewhirst perhaps best known for the ground-breaking Mastercuts series in the early 1990s – a series which redefined the landscape of the compilation market. Backbeats has been designed to offer some of the best music in the world from some of the greatest independent labels over the last 50 years.
