MUSIC REVIEW & COLLECTOR NOTES

Backbeats: Boogie's Gonna Getcha - 80s New York Boogie is the fourth digital release from Harmless-Demon Music's new Backbeats series. Featured here are a choice selection of tracks culled from the vaults of SAM Records, Easy Street Records and Streetwise Records from the 1980s. SAM is the New York based label best remembered for releasing the likes of Gary's Gang and John Davis and the Monster Orchestra during the 1970s. In the '80s they moved to a more funky urban sound and that's what compiler Ian Dewhirst concentrates on this compact disc. Easy Street was an '80s New York label that enjoyed moderate success and so their releases are a little harder to come by on compact disc or digital MP3s.

The comp appears to start off slowly with a Jonathan Fearing remix of Share the Night from World Premier, but a few minutes into the intro you are treated to a 109 BPM hypnotic funky tune with male vocals that I am ashamed to say I didn't catch back in the day. The rest of the disc just keeps building!

Original full length versions are used as this collection is aimed at DJs and '80s music collectors. Bonafide New York classics such as This Beat Is Mine by Vicky "D", Just A Groove by Glen Adams Affair, Let's Do It by Convertion and the killer Feel Alright by Komiko are all here in extended form.

A little background on the Backbeat series as told by the compilers:

Culled from the wealth of the Demon Music Group controlled catalogues, the Backbeats repertoire comes from the best collection of independent labels in the world including Hi, Cream, Philadelphia International, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Streetwise, Idlers, Warlock, Easy Street, Sam, Chi-Sound, Trax, Philly Groove, Jewel, Paula, Ronn, Ace, Tribe, Invictus, Hot Wax, Music Merchant, Amazon and numerous other catalogues which have shaped the history of Black Music and Dance Culture over the years.

The first ten (10) albums in the Backbeats series have been designed by veteran compiler Ian Dewhirst perhaps best known for the ground-breaking Mastercuts series in the early 1990s – a series which redefined the landscape of the compilation market. Backbeats has been designed to offer some of the best music in the world from some of the greatest independent labels over the last 50 years.
