Lipps Inc.'s best-of is the living proof that they were NOT just a one-hit wonder. Minneapolis-based Steven Greenberg managed to impress Neil Bogart and Bruce Bird at Casablanca with ROCK IT in late 1979 (not Funkytown!) - then they signed the group to the label.
MOUTH TO MOUTH, their debut album featured four giant disco hits. Three of these tracks are on this compact disc. It should be noted that the version of ROCK-IT found here is the original first released on his own Flight label.
PUCKER UP, the follow up album was very similar... their cover of HOW LONG was a hit. DESIGNER MUSIC, from 1981, was a modern techno dance effort. The tempos were pumped up. New wave ruled! Lead vocalist, Cynthia Johnson then left the group.
As a fan, LIPPS INC 4 cannot be challenged as the group's best effort. Exloring every facet of dance music, from sleaze to funk to Hi-NRG, do yourself a favor and seek it (only two tracks from four are featured here - leaving the fantastic I COULD NEVER BE SORRY off... Why I will never understand...). The album also spotlighted the vocal debut of two local singers : Melanie Rosales and Margaret Cox (who was later known as Tamara from Tamara & the Seen).
Tracks 11 and 12 are taken from a 1985 Lipps Inc. 12 inch single.
