NOTES:

The late Gwen Guthrie (1950-1999) may not have been a name one would hear on mainstream radio back in the day, but she was the co-writer of Ben E. King's Supernatural Thing as well as performing backup vocals for many big name artists (Aretha Franklin...).

In the early 1980s, Gwen would step from behind the shadows and embark on a solo career performing Paradise Garage club staples that garnered her a considerable following in the dance music community.

Gwen Guthrie's second album, Portrait from 1983 spawned several well known club classics such as Seventh Heaven, Padlock and Hopscotch and has recently been reissued on CD for the first time by the popular reissue label, PTG Records out of Holland.

Portrait is an album many of Gwen's fans have been wishing would come out on CD. It now has, along with bonus Larry Levan remixes making this a truly compelling reissue. These bonus tracks were originally released on the Padlock vinyl EP, which is heavily sought after.

Although I have the original 12 inch singles on vinyl from back in the day, I never had a chance to hear the full album from which they were taken until I heard this CD. The album versions are quite different from Larry Levan's sparser mixes and give the listener a very different perspective especially when one listens to the entire album as there are some nice ballads on it as well. Portrait has really held up well after all these years and I recommend this CD especially if you've worn out your vinyl copies plus you get all the versions you could ever want.

PTG Records and Vinyl Masterpiece are to be commended for their continued efforts to bring music collectors some choice CD reissues that other labels pass by. They go the extra mile by providing the original songs along with bonus tracks/mixes as well as including the original artwork and liner notes. Visit the PTG website to see and order all their releases.
