YOUR THOUGHTS & COMMENTS
Disco? The theme from "Love Story"? I think not. Andy's coolest moment in the 70's was his remake of "Can't Help Falling In Love"...that was great!!!
Of course, one of Andy's better known tracks - "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" - became a huge hit for the Boys Town Gang.
hi-hat: Beg to differ, but the 12" version of "Love Story" is most definitely disco. Running 9:45, with a more than 2-minute intro, this 1979 Bob Esty arrangement captures the USA vision of Euro-disco. Even the 'short version' at 7:25 is a full-blown hustler's paradise.
Rassy: "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" belongs to Franki Vallie, not Andy, unless you're referring to a cover.
It's not a patch on the obvious comparison, Johnny Mathis' "Begin The Beguine." Same label, same year; different producers, but the same disco apotheosis of an aging pop icon. Andy was no Johnny, and whoever wrote the lyrics was no Cole Porter.
That said, I'm making a stink about the difference between brilliance and excellence. Andy is suave enough, even without Johnny's last-verse wailing; and Bob Esty pencils in satisfyingly long and deep records. A good hustle record.
Laugh all you want, it was still a very solid song that put people on the dance floor! It's technical brilliance made it easy to mix in and out of. Two solid breaks, and the JOHNNY MATHIS record you are talking about was the same style, and the same BPM. Easy to mix the two!! I give it a 7 on my scale from 1-10.
