Your Comments on Elton John

See, Elton went through this period of desperation around 1978, and produced some truly wretched crap. I think this was around the time he decided to marry a woman (just did it to impress President Reagan.) Oh, yeah, these cuts were truly wretched crap.

Elton John is one of those artist that changes with time that's why his musical career is so storied. During the mid seventies his singles Island Girl,Philadelphia Freedom,Don't Go Breakin My Heart all great songs you can dance to and all released in less than a year apart.

He recorded some great sessions with Thom Bell and Kenny Gamble in about 1977. One of the songs, Are You Ready For Love (also recorded by the Spinners) was recently unearthed and a number one UK hit, only slightly remixed.

I really had high hopes for "Victim of Love." How could a record produced (and mostly written) by Donna Summer's star co-writer Pete Bellotte not be good? But the songs sound sterile to me (though the actual SOUND of the record is pretty good) and Elton sounds totally uninterested and uninspired. And why would ANYBODY be covering "Johnny B Goode" yet again?

The song Philadelphia Freedom could also be arguably called disco as well. It did score as R&B, and is a great song. Other of his early 1970s music, while not disco, are also good songs (like Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting). As for when he went to crap, that happened after the Healing Hands CD. He should have retired after that--I don't even know how the crap he put out in the 1990s qualifies as "music".
